It is a synthetic story of a country in Istria (now Croatia), the place of my birth several years ago. Historical description from Roman times to today (abandoned town). I intertwine with some parts of the history of my maternal family. Written in English for its diffusion in the world of the "diaspora-emigration" of the descendants of those who lived and left Istria after the end of the Second World War.

FIANONA-PLOMIN:
Story of a country and a family
2021-Guido Cavallo (english version)
Studying and retracing (as far as possible) the events of a family is certainly not easy when many of its members are no longer alive and the path of the living as well as the dead ranges from two centuries, or rather three if we start from the only people (ancestors or grandparents / great-grandparents) of which we have certain information and also some documentary evidence, such as photos, documents or quotations in books and historical facts. In these pages I have reconstructed the life and history of the Stefani family (Stepcich in the original Croatian version) and of the Cavallo family on the wife side, that is Stefani. I retraced 5 generations, stopping the story at the sixth, that is that of boys or girls who are now about 10 or a few years older. It is important in this story to know the place and the history of the places where these families lived: Fianona now Plomin in Istria - Croatia since 1947 and then other places, Ronchi dei Legionari and Padua as well as other places just mentioned in the story. The history of Fianona is framed and inserted in the history of the whole territory, that is, Istria as a place where populations and ethnic groups of various origins have passed: Slavic, Germanic, Venetian, Liburnian, Roman, Illyrian ... etc. The starting point is the best known, even in the oral memory of the women of the Stefani family (Stepcich), that is Massimiliano, born in Fianona in 1872 even if quotations carved on a seventeenth-century gravestone in Istrian stone, in sieved bas-relief and belonged to the family of the Stepcichs, not noble but certainly a citizen, indicates that the Stepcichs appear among the owners of wooded areas of Fianona in 1775-1776: “Costiera boschiva d'Ant-o, and Flli Zustovich Antonio, e Mattio, and Flli Stepsich”; ... . low wooded coast in the district called Lipiza owned by heirs all Stepcich and C. " (Morosini-catastic of the woods of the province of Istria). The ending does not exist instead ... as the sixth generation, made up of young people and even minor children still represents the continuation of a story to be told but which does not yet exist. To them the desire and the commitment to continue this story.
