About the Author

Hi there! I’m Stacy, the artist and owner of Knotty By Nature. My journey with macramé fiber art began when I was planning my “Camp Boho”-themed wedding with my now husband. It was then that I dreamed of creating a macramé backdrop that would be hung from a wooden teepee arbor as I married the man of my dreams. I envisioned modern macramé table runners to dress up our farm tables during our reception as our loved ones gathered for dinner. Lastly, to our guests who helped us “tie the knot,” I would give macramé key chains for them to take home as keepsakes. All of this sounded perfect in my mind; however, at the time we were planning our wedding, I did not know how to macramé, let alone tie a single knot. I quickly got to work learning what I needed to know to make my wedding dreams a reality!

While on our honeymoon, I mentioned to my husband that I was still interested in creating macramé pieces even if the designs could no longer be used for our wedding. I had this strong desire to refine my skills in the art form and a short while after we returned home, I picked up a few supplies from a local arts and crafts store and learned a few more basic knots. From there, I was hooked. Macramé soon became a creative outlet for me and what began as a hobby transformed into a knotty small business. I remember the exact moment when I decided to take that leap of faith in becoming a small business owner. It was after spin class and my sister was driving us to grab some lunch when she suggested that I create an Instagram to showcase my designs. I immediately laughed at the idea, thinking that no one would be interested in seeing my art flood their Instagram feed.

After a few words of encouragement, I decided what’s the worst that could happen? I could very well just delete my Instagram if it did not take off. So, there we sat, brainstorming business name ideas while listening to hip-hop music in the background. A few ideas were tossed around until I said under my breath, “Knotty By Nature,” and that was the exact moment that sparked it all. I combined my passion for macramé fiber art, my love for nature and hip-hop music, and the business name even included a witty pun—it was perfect. Knot long after I created my Instagram account, I launched my Etsy shop and began selling my handmade macramé designs. Fast forward to four years later, I am even more passionate about macramé than I was when I first started. I enjoy creating macramé designs that reflect the different stages in my life. From starting out creating macramé designs for weddings, such as backdrops, veils, bouquet, and boutonniere wraps, my business has transformed into creating designs for nursery rooms.

I love being able to share my passion for macramé with my knotty community through teaching workshops. It is an incredibly rewarding feeling to be able to share my knowledge, skills, and tips and tricks that I have learned along the way, as I guide others in creating their very own design. The possibilities with macramé are endless and I am excited to continue to grow as an artist.

Stacy’s macramé journey began with her dream of a “Camp Boho” wedding. She made a macramé backdrop, macramé accessories for herself and her groom, and even gave her guests macramé keychains (so they could truly help her celebrate “tying the knot”).

Introduction

I’m so excited that you have picked up my book and are ready to dive into the knotty world of macramé fiber art! The great thing about this art form as opposed to others is that it is very forgiving. If you do knot like how a certain knot looks in your pattern, you have the freedom to untie it and try again! Just make sure you do not cut the cord off before untying it. That would be a knotty nightmare!

If you are brand new to macramé, I recommend taking the time to practice the knots outlined in the Knot Guide section to familiarize yourself with the basic knots. No two macramé cords are exactly alike, so have fun experimenting with different types of cords to help you figure out what you enjoy working with! Through repetition and practice, you will discover the tensile strength you like in your knots.

Most importantly, enjoy your journey. Try not to rush your projects. If you allow it to be, macramé has a beautiful way of being therapeutic. I love unwinding with a macramé project—turning on some music, clearing my thoughts, and getting knotty. If you find yourself becoming frustrated with a knot or pattern, take some time to pause, and resume your project later.

The designs in this book are a great starting point for creating macramé bags and belts. I have made patterns that are comprised of repetitive basic knots; that way, you can grow your confidence before exploring more advanced knots and patterns. I provide knotty tips throughout the book, but you will find that you will begin to establish your own personal style and preferences with macramé as you gain experience. Lean into what works best for you. These projects are meant to be enjoyed, so without further ado, let’s get knotty!
