Annotations

William Ellis Stanyon, born on 8 January 1870 in the village of Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire, England, was a professional magician in London. He also was a magic dealer.

Professionally known as Professor Ellis Stanyon, he was one of the children of William John Stanyon, a wood sawyer.

Stanyon married to Catherine Fairs on the fifth of november 1893 at the Trinity Church, in Marylebone, London. From this union were born five children.

After seeing a magic show at school, Stanyon became particularly interested in magic.

In 1899, the young man started a first periodical, called "Stanyon's Serials".

Just a year later, in 1900, he edited and published a journal of his own, known as "Magic". The aim of this publication was to "popularize the Art of Sleight of Hand". It ran at eight pages per issue. The contents of these journals were tricks, news, reviews, and gossip. It included advertisements too.

A method of escape from packed boxes, published in his journal, caused some stir at the time. Indeed, Harry Houdini accused the magician of having posted a bounty of several pounds for his secrets, even if the methods used by Stanyon were, according to his rival magician, nothing more than "puny attempts at duplication".

Nevertheless, Stanyon is considered by magic historians to be one of the most prolific writers on magic tricks in the world, and his books were particularly desired by amateurs and magic enthusiasts.

The Magic journal ran a long time, counting 177 issues and totalling more than 1400 pages. During World War I, Stanyon put the publication to a break, and resumed publishing after the end of the war. In June 1920, he published the final issue of "Magic".

Stanyon died in 1951, at the age of 81 years old. One his sons, Cyril Stanyon, took over the legacy of his father and launched himself in magic too.
