A Note To My Favorite People In All The Worlds

If You Liked This Story…

Chapter One

“How are your aches and pains doing? You want a couple of these?”

Garland turned to Nathan as he closed the trunk lid, showing him the bottle of pain pills. She didn’t believe for a minute he would admit the pain he was clearly in but she couldn’t not try to help.

“I’ll manage. I feel better this morning. But thank you for asking. It’s appreciated.”

“I know you can. I just see no reason for you to suffer needlessly. Let me know if you change your mind.” She tucked the pills in the bag and leaned into the car, giving the bag to Aba. They smiled at one another and Aba put the bag at her feet. It was loaded with food and water; breakfast and lunch.

Garland stood to her full height and stretched before moving around to the front of the car to stand by Nathan. He had found a map in the glove compartment of the Mustang and had marked a few places of interest on it the night before. He spread it out on the hood and started showing her the roads they would take to get her to her meeting place.

Aba openly stared at them. She wasn’t concerned about being busted doing it. Her fascination with all of them was nothing she cared to hide.

She watched as the two adults studied the map, their expressions serious as they talked. They stood close to one another but not too close. Their postures and gestures were relaxed.

Originally she had believed Nathan and Garland were a couple. She would have figured it out with time but if Cooper had not corrected her the night before she would have continued to believe so until proven wrong.

There was something about the way they talked to one another, their ease with one another.

Cooper had said they had not known Garland for long. Watching the two adults interact made it hard to believe that they had not known one another for longer than he had said.

Thinking of Cooper made her eyes shift to him. He was not dealing with the early morning as well as the rest of them was.

It amused her.

Cooper scowled at the adults as he waited for them to shut the hell up and get in the car. The sun wasn’t completely up yet and everyone was talking too damn much for his liking.

Aba tried hard to suppress the grin that rose to her face at the annoyed sound Cooper made when his dad finally began to fold up the map. Nathan said something to Garland and she nodded before they separated.

“Everybody ready to leave?”

Nathan leaned his head down so he could check on the two in the back of the car before looking over the top at Garland. She gave him a nod before sliding into the Mustang. He gave one last long look around them before doing the same.

Aba’s attention shifted from Cooper to Nathan’s question. She called out an enthusiastic yes. She was settling in with them just fine. Garland grinned at Nathan before peeking back at the two sitting behind them.

“Alright, then.” He gave them a small smile before starting the Mustang.

Aba’s radiant smile made Garland happy. The harsh bruises on the girl’s face and neck stood out but when asked she had told Garland more than once that she felt fine and barely noticed them. Something about the girl’s smile made Garland believe her.

She liked Aba.

She liked all of them.

Even grumpy Cooper. He frowned at her from under his cowboy hat when her gaze shifted to him but at least his scowl did not deepen when she smiled at him.

She’d take it.

For the first time she realized, truly and completely, that within a few hours they were going to be separating. Really separating.

There had been too many close calls since they had met up. The end of her leg of the journey had looked so distant and had been so dangerous up to where they currently were that it had not seemed like she would ever get to where she needed to go. She had been so preoccupied with surviving the next ten minutes that she had not had time to worry about the next hour, let alone the next day.

But it appeared as if she was going to make it to her group’s meeting place after all; despite all they had be [...]
