She had no way of knowing that her husband's nephew, Jett, was chugging along in his beat-up old Ford, having decided that he'd never make his brother Dave's house, and that his nearest port of rescue was his Uncle Luke's house. It was not yet noon, and Uncle Luke would surely be at work now, and his two girl cousins in school. Which would leave only his Aunt Dolly at home-if she were home and had not gone off anywhere.

He almost hoped that she was gone. He could curl up on the car seat and sleep till his cousins or his uncle came home. He felt a little hesitant about walking in on his aunt and surprising her like this, without any warning of his visit. And she wasn't even his real aunt, having married his Uncle Luke only a few years before. She'd come out to the Lanigan farm with Luke shortly after the wedding, and that was the only time that he had ever seen her. His memory of her was vague. Of course, five years before he'd been only eighteen and not much interested in lady relatives.
