The story revolves around the author's journey through the Weres, a group of creatures that began centuries ago with brutal violence and culminated in a wedding. The author, a young girl, had only contemplated marriage once, when she and her partner Serena planned a grand escape. They agreed to marry Serena, believing they would be accepted into Human territory. However, 14 years later, Serena has never married her. The author tries to arrange a meeting with the Vampyre council, but is met with a call from one of the council's aides, who reveals that the Were is a powerful and dangerous Alpha. The author is hesitant to marry this dangerous Were, as he is too busy with his pack.
Ten days have passed, and Misery Lark is a bride who has become a project that requires a concerted effort from an interdisciplinary crew to look weddable. She is given a bridal jumpsuit by a manicurist, a facialist, a hairdresser, and a makeup expert. Misery's father demanded an all-Vampyre armed security detail for the ceremony, which led to weeks of negotiations and a near break of the engagement. The ceremony is supposed to be a symbol of peace, but the Weres refused, leading to weeks of negotiations and finally, staffing the event with Humans.
The tense atmosphere is further complicated by the presence of Bat, the groom, and the black suits escorting Owen and Misery. Misery's future husband, Wolf, is expected to try to kill her within the month. Her father, Father, explains that an alliance with the Weres is necessary for the surivival of the marriage. Misery's father, Councilman Lark, tells her that a wedding is the most beautiful day of a bride's life, and she will be his wife once the handfasting is complete.
Misery is unwavering in her commitment to this union, and her father sighs, stating that she was always needlessly defiant. He also reveals that once the handfasting is complete, she will be his wife. Misery is not prone to panic, fear, or last-minute changes of heart, as she has done this before, and the doors open to what's left of her life.
The narrator is attending an outdoor wedding ceremony with string lights, soft breeze, and winking stars. The viola player is a member of the Human Philharmonic, and the guests are confused and unsure about the ceremony. The narrator is not sure what the Weres are up to, as she has never been in the presence of one.
The bride's guests are familiar but only vaguely familiar. They are a sea of willowy figures with unblinking lilac eyes and pointed ears. The groom's side is the one that emanates a foreign kind of heat, wanting the narrator dead. The Weres are taller, stronger, and faster than Vampyres, and none seem particularly enthused at the idea of their Alpha marrying one of them.
The narrator has no friends on the left, and only enemies on the right. She looks straight ahead, at her future husband, who stands at the end of the path, listening to what someone is whispering in his ear. His father warns her not to cross him, as he is very dangerous.
The narrator realizes that the groom's gaze is an odd pale green that borders on white, and that his eyes roam over her face. He watches her like something made of maggots and takes one deep breath, slow, then another, sharp, the moment she is delivered to the altar. His expression widens into something that looks indecipherably shaken, and she knows it.
The narrator is not about to start caring now, as it is on him if he doesn't like what he sees. They stand in front of each other, this side of too close, two strangers who have just met and are about to get married.
The text describes a wedding where the bride is surrounded by her groom, who is a sluggish drummer. The groom's gaze is hungrily, and the couple is surrounded by people, including the head of her father's guards and the human guests. The bride is hesitant to leave the groom, but the groom's determination and warmth make her feel like a prey. The wedding is filled with chaos, and the bride is terrified of the groom's potential destruction. The groom inhales several times, filling his lungs and pulling her in.
He opens his mouth, and the bride is terrified of him tearing her apart. However, less than ten minutes later, he slips a ring around her finger, and they swear to love each other until the day they die.
On a sultry Thursday evening, the bullpen is contemplating bodily harm against Missy, who works from home 90% of the time. Pierce, her manager, warns her not to take it personally and that other people's approval is a powerful drug. She admits that she has been training like piano prodigies since early childhood and that she doesn't own the necessary glands. Pierce also mentions that someone did a penetration test against a firewall she'd been working on for weeks and breached it in one hour.
Missy waits for a reply from Pierce, but it doesn't come. He laughs and suggests that people will get over it. She then hears her name called, and she notices a woman standing on the other side of the divider. She recognizes her as a Vampyre's friend, but she isn't related to Missy. She is her father's Right Hand, Head of his Guard, and she has been summoned to The Nest.
Missy is relieved to hear that she hasn't spoken with another Vampyre in years. She decides to tell Vania to fuck off and tells her to go find out. Pierce reminds them of his unfortunate existence and asks if they are into LARPing or something. Vania squints, and Pierce tries to make him hurt.
As the bullpen panics, Missy tells Vania that she liked her job because they bought her circadian rhythm disorder excuse and allowed her to come in at night. She apologies and invites her to join her. In the meantime, she gives in to her curiosity and follows her, straightening the benjamin fig on her way out.
The City is a bloodred podium that stretches underground for hundreds of feet, topped by a mirror skyscraper that comes alive around sunset and slides back to sleep in the early hours of the morning. It is the crown jewel of their territory and the center of their community. The Nest is a place for shops, offices, and errands, where anything one could need, from nonurgent healthcare to a zoning permit, can be easily obtained. In the uppermost floors, the builders made room for some private quarters, some of which have been purchased by the most influential families in their society.
The only Lark I recognize from personal experience is the one closest to Father's office. My grandfather was already old and a little demented by the time Owen and I were born, and my most vivid memory of him is from that time. Vania tells me that the councilman is waiting for me, but I shrug. I don't think he would call me here for anything other than to commiserate or find solace in your filial affection.
The River that slices The City into North and South—us, and them—is littered with outlook towers, checkpoints, and guard posts, heavily monitored 24/7. A single bridge exists, but access to it is closely surveilled in both directions. Past that, there are a few Were security areas, and the deep green of an oak forest that stretches south for miles.
Misery's father, Henry Lark, is impeccably put together and trusts that Misery is not dying. He gives her a once-over, referring to her brown contacts, which she considers taking out in the car, but decides not to bother.
Misery, a Vampyre, is living among the Humans for years, and her father, Father, is angry at her for not being able to see her daughter. Father explains that the right choice is to ensure happiness for the largest number of people, and she was the means to that choice. He also mentions a wedding, which Misery is hesitant about as it is not a long-term relationship in Vampyre culture.
Father informs Misery that the Humans recently had an election, and they have a leadership structure that is restricted to a few families. The new governor-elect is Maddie Garcia, who will start her term soon. The amicable relationship between the two people is driven by Father's collaboration with Governor Davenport. However, Misery has no opinion on her and has refused all her requests for meetings.
Ms. Garcia is tasked with guaranteeing the safety of her people and may leave the current alliance as it is. As soon as she takes office, the Collateral program will be no longer, and they have been formally asked to return the Human Collateral and send back the girl who is currently serving as the Vampyre Collateral. The current Vampyre Collateral is a boy, who Misery met once.
The Vampyres have been holding a child hostage for over a century, ensuring peace between the two species. The Humans have decided not to wait for Maddie Garcia to take office, and the Vampyres have been holding a child as a deterrent for ten years. The Vampyres hold a human child as a deterrent for ten years, with the mutual understanding that if the Humans violate the terms of their alliance, the Vampyres will instantly murder the child.
The Vampyres hold a Vampyre child as a deterrent for ten years, with the mutual understanding that if the ceasefire between them and the Humans broke down, the Vampyres would instantly murder the child. The Vampyres are closely tied to those in power, making decisions concerning peace and war.
The Vampyres are taught about the danger of the southern border and not to mess with anything Were. However, four of the boys, Abel and Alexandra Boden, were killed by the Weres. Ansel Boden, the boy's father, had strong ties to several council families and petitioned for a retaliatory act, arguing that the good of the people as a whole comes before the good of the one.
The boys reappeared, intact, and were interrogated by Were guards. They were eventually returned home, whole and healthy. The Weres have been merciless to the Vampyres and the Humans, leading to a conflict between the two species.
Misery, a young Vampyre girl, is asked about the change in the leadership structure of the Weres after a meeting with the Alpha of the Southwest pack, Roscoe. The Alpha, who is known for his disinterest in diplomacy, has been challenged by the Weres, who are closely related to dogs. Misery's father, Owen, is surprised that Owen has shown little commitment to the role and is more interested in socializing.
The new Alpha, who is not weak but more open-minded, believes that peace in the region is possible and that alliances among all three species should be cultivated. Misery's father explains that the Alpha was chosen to be the Collateral because he believed that peace in the region could be achieved and that alliances among all three species should be cultivated.
Misery's father reveals that Misery was a peculiar child, always uninterested in what went on around her and was often mocked by other children. She has learned not to care about anything and is now twenty-five with fake Human IDs, an apartment, a cat, and a job. She is confident that she will find another soon, with fewer Pierces and friends.
The Alpha's relationship with the Vampyres has been strained, as they have always ignored each other due to their differences in power. Misery's father's decision to choose Misery as the Collateral is based on her own experiences and beliefs, which she believes are valid reasons for her decision.
Misery, a young girl, is asked by her father about a wedding between a Vampyre and an Alpha that was supposed to broker peace but ended in death. The Weres are animals on the road to extinction, and the good of the most must be considered. If they let the Humans and Weres form an alliance that excludes them, they could completely wipe them out.
Misery is surprised by the situation and asks her father for a compensated marriage. Father offers her ten billion dollars, but she refuses due to the deep pockets of the council and the expectation of a real marriage. He also mentions that the Alpha will send a Were to them, ensuring their reciprocal safety.
