Chapter 1

Ardith Law, a Hollywood star for the past forty years, attended the Golden Globe Awards every year to pay respects to her fellow actors and be seen herself. At sixty-two, she had won three Golden Globes and two Academy Awards. Ardith was known for her variety and depth of roles and the quality of the movies she starred in. She was picky about the parts she took, wanting to be in movies with depth and merit.

Ardith turned down most easy parts and turned to scripts constantly to find the right roles. Her high standards and perfectionism on set earned her the reputation of being difficult or a diva. However, she was a consummate professional and a star to her core. She hated working with lazy actors and stupidity and phonies, and was true to herself and her high standards.

Ardith's personal life took a back seat to her career, as she had an eight-year marriage to Hollywood producer John Walker. They had made several movies together, which had legendary box office successes and enhanced both their careers. Their daughter, Morgan, was now thirty-eight years old and a plastic surgeon in New York.

Ardith wished she had spent more time with Morgan when she was younger, but her own career had been white-hot then, and she was too often away on location and away from her. Morgan respected her mother's career but had never enjoyed it, and their differences in personalities and respective careers were hard to bridge now.

John Walker, a Hollywood star, died in a tragic helicopter accident with a young actress, Morgan. Ardith, who was thirty-one at the time, had never forgiven him for their involvement. Ardith had never married again and had no regrets about not having a child. Their relationship had never been easy, and they didn't see each other often anymore. Ardith had to deal with her own life as a star in L.A., and Morgan was busy with her career as a physician in New York.

For the past twelve years, Ardith found comfortable companionship with William West, a handsome man with a fifty-year career. He was kind, attentive, and good company, and had never won an Oscar. He was in surprisingly good condition for his age and contributed a small amount to expenses. Ardith didn't expect anything from him, but he was in surprisingly good condition for his age.

Ardith and West had become a legendary Hollywood couple, always seen together. They had each other and weren't alone or lonely. When the car finally stopped in front of the Hilton, Ardith stepped out in a long sleek black satin gown, wearing a diamond necklace and earrings she borrowed from Van Cleef & Arpels. She smiled and waved like royalty at the mass of photographers and fans, and they glided smoothly inside to make their way down the red carpet before the dinner and award ceremony began.

Ardith and Bill West were a strong, self-sufficient couple who lived together for ten out of twelve years. They were both Hollywood icons and thought to be the perfect couple. They spent half an hour going down the red carpet and attending the Golden Globes and Oscars awards. Ardith and Bill were under close scrutiny all night, and they planned to leave with him.

Ardith and Bill accurately predicted who would win that night and approved of the foreign press's choices. They escaped without attending any parties and returned to Ardith's house in Bel Air before midnight. Ardith had already packed most of Bill's needs for England, but he kept adding to it. She took him everywhere, which Bill objected to at first, but eventually got used to him.

The next day, Ardith met Bill in a navy cashmere dressing gown and asked him about her daily life. He had an insatiable hunger for knowing the world around her, more so than Bill, who read Variety for news of the film industry. He left Ardith in charge of world news and promised she would let him know if the stock market crashed or a war broke out.

Ardith was expecting an assistant, but Bill wanted her to accept it as part of his contract. She could always fire her if she didn't like her, and it made Bill feel as though he had done something special for her.

Ardith, a nurse and girlfriend, is concerned about her relationship with Bill, who is her age. She asks him about his diet and how he would have liked to be with her. Ardith is impressed by Morgan's medical career and their relationship, but she is not interested in marriage. Ardith encourages her daughter to make an effort in finding a husband and child, as she is not getting younger.

Bill has old-school views on women and relationships, and she is considering going to Vietnam for a special project. They both feel exhausted and ready to leave the house for a flight to London. Bill is excited to work on a film for two months and has a good role, but he is sorry to leave her. Ardith promises to visit him in three weeks and plans to spend a night in New York with Morgan.

Ardith teases Bill about his relationship with her and reminds him not to fall in love with the star. They are faithful to each other, and they are happy to be working together. Bill is easygoing, comfortable with his success, and doesn't want more than that. He is happy to still be in the business and have work at all, unlike Ardith who has always pushed herself hard with her roles.

Ardith goes back to bed, happy for Bill's departure and the impressive cast and director he has worked with before.

Ardith Law, a housekeeper in Los Angeles, wakes up to find an enormous motorcycle heading towards her house. The biker, who looks like Darth Vader or Hell's Angel, appears to be in good shape and has a powerful build. Ardith is terrified and decides to call the police. She takes a panic button from her drawer and watches the biker as he approaches the house.
