(1) The circumstances under which the Illuminati order was established and its strokes of fate are well known from general historiography. Scholarly interest in the Illuminati usually ends in 1785 and is largely limited to prominent members and the impact of the order on current political affairs.

Beides hat es gegeben. Es wäre völlig Realitätsfern anzunehmen, dass eine Geheimgesellschaft wie der Illuminatenorden seine Tätigkeit völlig einstellen würde. Letztlich war primär der Orden in Bayern betroffen. Es ist nur folgerichtig anzunehmen, dass es in dieser und der folgenden Zeit vor allem um Schadensbegrenzung und den Schutz der Ordensbrüder vor Repressalien ging. Dieser Schutz hat bis heute eine hohe Bedeutung.)

(4) But how was it possible for the Order to continue unnoticed? It didn't go unnoticed. It is known from history that the Illuminati continued to work in part within the Masonic lodges. Years later, some founded new lodges under the constitution of the Great Mother Lodge of the Eclectic Masonic Federation of 1783. However, the Order focused and concentrated on small circles that ensured the Order's survival up to the present day.

(5) One of the centers of the Illuminati order was Bonn. In 1781, the local Illuminati brothers joined together to form the Minerval Church “Stagira”. The founding members included the brothers Johann Peter Eichhoff (Hephaestion) and Johann Joseph Eichhoff (Desiderius). When Christian Gottlob Neefe (Glaudius) became the prefect of the order in 1784, there was unrest among the Bonn Illuminati, and the Stagira Minerval Church was threatened with decay from within. The Bonn Illuminati were never exposed to any political persecution at that time. But on the contrary, the political situation even suited the Illuminati very well.

Als im Jahr 1784 Christian Gottlob Neefe (Glaudius) das Amt des Präfekten erhielt, kam es unter den Bonner Illuminaten zu Unruhen und der Minervalkirche Stagira drohte von innen heraus der Verfall. Die Bonner Illuminaten waren zu dieser Zeit keiner politischen Verfolgung ausgesetzt. Ganz im Gegenteil. Die politische Situation kam den Illuminaten sogar sehr gelegen.

(6) The year 1784 was the year in which the persecution of the Illuminati order in Bavaria began. But it was also the year when Maximilian Franz, who was influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment, became archbishop and elector of Cologne. On April 27, 1784, he arrived in Bonn and took over the government of his bishoprics, which included Münster as well as Cologne. The Bonn Illuminati had nothing to fear from him. In addition, several Illuminati, including Christian Gottlob Neefe, belonged to Maximilian Franz's court. Therefore, the situation in Bonn was completely different from that in Bavaria.

April 1784 traf er in Bonn ein und übernahm die Regierungsgeschäfte seiner Bistümer, zu dem neben Köln auch Münster gehörte. Die Bonner Illuminaten hatten von ihm also nichts zu befürchten. Die Situation in Bonn war damit eine völlig andere als in Bayern. Hinzu kam, dass mehrere Illuminaten, darunter auch Christian Gottlob Neefe, dem Hof von Maximilian Franz angehörten.)
