The Digestive System

For those who are not familiar with anatomy, the colon is a part of the large intestine. The function of the large intestine is to remove water from the body's feces. The stool then continues on to the rectum, leaving the body by way of the anus. The colon is approximately five feet long. Although the term large intestine, lower intestine, and colon are all used interchangeably the colon is actually only a part of the large intestine. The confusion may have come from translation. The ancient Greek word for large intestine is “kolon”.

Let's start from the beginning to better understand the truth about colon cleansing. We are going to explore the digestive system. This is something most of us learned in school. Even with education, at one time I could not tell you which came first, the large intestine or the small one.

The digestive system is made up of hollow organs which are connected in a series of long and winding tubes that reach from the mouth all the way to the anus. This path has a lining which is called mucosa. It is the mucosa which adds liquid along the way to help digest our food.

There are organs connected to the digestive tract, like the liver and pancreas, which also add their own special blend of juices to aid in the process of digestion. These organs are also connected with small tubes to the intestine.

The body needs to digest our food into a formula which it can use to grow, build muscle, and nourish it's self. The food we eat is broken down into smaller particles that our bodies can use. The nutrients from our food are carried to the body through the blood supply. When our digestive system is not functioning properly, our body does not get the nourishment it needs to maintain it's optimum performance.

Because the digestive system begins in the mouth, many people will say you must chew your food well in order for the nutrients to be fully absorbed by the body. Although it is best to chew your food thoroughly and slowly, this does not mean the nutrients will be absorbed any more or less from the digested food. It does mean there will be less digested food for the body to absorb.

There are some real medical reasons why you need to eat and drink slowly. The first one is because the faster you eat or drink, the more air you swallow. This can cause gas. This gas is released either through the mouth or the rectum. It is this gas which can cause a bloated feeling right after eating. By slowing down just a little you can reduce this feeling. Another thing which happens is the food is exposed more to the saliva, which helps in the process of digestion.

Saliva has a great deal to do with our digestive system. The saliva is what helps to relax the pylorus. This is the muscle at the bottom of the stomach which allows the food to pass into the small intestine. If the pylorus can not relax enough for the food to pass, it will lay in your stomach. And you thought Thanksgiving dinner was bad!
