What Exactly Is The Vagus Nerve?

Let us first start our discussion by understanding what the vagus nerve is. Vagus is a Latin word that means, “to wander.” Even the English words vagrant, vague and vagabond all come from the root word “vagus.” The vagus nerve thus is known as the “wandering nerve”. This is because it splits into multiple branches that diverge from two thick stems that are rooted in the brainstem and cerebellum. The vagus nerve then meanders into the lowest innards of your abdomen touching a host of major organs along the way.

The first person to note the vagus nerve and its role in social behavior was Sir Charles Darwin in his book ‘The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals’ that was published in 1872. In the book, he proposed that the vagus nerve and the central nervous system engage in a reciprocal and dynamic exchange of neurologic information and this has an effect on the spontaneous expression of emotions. Sir Darwin asserts that human affective expression is integral to natural selection, adaptation, and survival.
