Chapter 1

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger's early life and education played a significant role in shaping the man who would later become a world-famous actor, bodybuilder, and politician.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Thal, Austria, on July 30, 1947. He was the second son of Gustav Schwarzenegger, who served as the local chief of police, and his wife, Aurelia. However, there are some contentious elements in his family history. Gustav Schwarzenegger joined the Nazi Party and the Sturmabteilung (SA) in 1938, during the Anschluss, and he served as a military policeman in various campaigns during World War II, including the invasions of Poland, France, and the Soviet Union. He was even present during the siege of Leningrad and reached the rank of Hauptfeldwebel. Gustav was wounded in the Battle of Stalingrad and was discharged in 1943 after contracting malaria. It is important to note that his wartime service raised questions about whether he played a role in war atrocities. This aspect of Gustav's past became widely known during Arnold's political career in the 2003 California gubernatorial recall election.

Gustav Schwarzenegger married Aurelia in 1945, when he was 38 years old and she was 23. The Schwarzenegger household was characterized as strict, with discipline enforced through physical means. Arnold's recollections of his childhood in Austria highlighted the use of corporal punishment when they misbehaved. He grew up in a Catholic family, which provided a strong religious and moral foundation for him.

At school, Arnold was known for his cheerful and exuberant personality, although he struggled with reading and was later diagnosed with dyslexia. The family faced financial difficulties, and Arnold remembered one of the highlights of his youth being the purchase of a refrigerator. His father, Gustav, was a sports enthusiast and aspired for his sons to excel in Bavarian curling. This influence led Arnold to participate in various sports during his early years.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's journey into bodybuilding began in 1960, when his football coach introduced him to weight training at a local gym. By the age of 14, he had already chosen bodybuilding as his career over football. He had started weight training at 15 and embarked on an intensive training program under the guidance of Dan Farmer. By the age of 17, he had officially begun his competitive bodybuilding career.

Schwarzenegger's visits to a gym in Graz had a significant impact on his early experiences with bodybuilding. He would also frequent local movie theaters to watch films featuring bodybuilding idols like Reg Park, Steve Reeves, and Johnny Weissmuller. Reeves, in particular, left a lasting impression on him and served as an inspiration for his own aspirations in bodybuilding.

In 1961, Arnold met Kurt Marnul, a former Mr. Austria, who invited him to train at a gym in Graz. He was so dedicated to his training that he even broke into the gym on weekends when it was closed. This level of commitment showed his unwavering dedication to bodybuilding from a young age.

Tragedy struck Arnold's family when his brother, Meinhard, died in a car crash on May 20, 1971, while driving under the influence. Schwarzenegger did not attend his brother's funeral, and this became a subject of controversy. Meinhard was engaged to Erika Knapp, and they had a three-year-old son named Patrick. Arnold took it upon himself to support Patrick's education and help him relocate to the United States.

In 1972, Arnold's father, Gustav, passed away due to a stroke. Schwarzenegger's absence from his father's funeral has been the subject of differing accounts and explanations. Some claim that it was because he was preparing for a bodybuilding contest, while others suggest that it was to create controversy for the documentary "Pumping Iron." The true reasons behind his absence remain somewhat unclear.

Arnold spoke candidly about the difficulties he experienced in his relationship with his father during an interview, describing a difficult upbringing that included what he called "child abuse." He spoke of being hit and having his hair pulled, but he also emphasized that these experiences shaped his determination and resolve to succeed.

Arnold Schwarzenegger fulfilled his mandatory one-year military service in the Austrian Army in 1965, which was a requirement for all 18-year-old Austrian males at the time. During this period, he won the Junior Mr. Europe contest. However, his passion for bodybuilding led him to go AWOL during basic training to participate in a competition. This resulted in a week-long stay in military prison, but he was determined to pursue his dreams.
