Chapter 1 - What is Backpacking?

The term backpacking has been around since the ‘hippy’ days and is commonly known today as a form of low cost travel. It is referred to as a form of tourism. Backpacking used to be a popular form of travel to cities and many people across the world use this form of travel still today. However, Westerners refer to backpacking as hiking. If you are planning a backpacking trip then there are many things to consider remaining safe, healthy, and having the proper gear.

Backpackers have evolved from this form of low cost travel and carrying only the basic needs to carrying technological equipment like laptops and GPS equipment. These electronic trends coupled a term known as ‘flashpacking’.

The term flashpacking is a neologism and refers to the changes and improvements on the trends of backpacking. A flashpacker has similar characteristics of a backpacker because they share the same independence without a fixed itinerary. However, the flashpacker considers relatively longer periods of travel to locations that are often more exotic and far flung. The difference between a backpacker and a flashpacker is that the budget of the backpacker remains relatively cheap and the flashpacker has more disposable income. Flashpacking is also referred to as backpacking with style.

Backpacking is a common form of travel when people also go hiking. Many people like to choose destinations of high elevation or to lakes and campgrounds. When people go backpacking they don’t use motorized vehicles or fly where they need to go. They hike. It is common for backpackers to travel by foot to the locations they want to travel to. However, many backpackers don’t plan a destination but instead a period of time they will be gone. They enjoy the freedom of the road or the mountainous trails. This is often the favored method of backpacking.

When you plan a backpacking trip you need to be fully prepared. You should be sure you have the proper gear for all weather types and comfort. You should be sure you are prepared in case someone is injured and you should know where your location is at all times. You should backpack with common sense and always make good decisions and be aware of your surroundings.

The ultimate goal of backpacking is to have a good time and enjoy the freedom of the road or the trail. However, safety is most important and should not be forgotten. This includes taking care of your body and your needs. You will have an excellent trip and a lot of fun if you pay attention to the tips in this book.

Chapter 2 - Backpacking and Your Health

Stay in Good Health

When you are backpacking it is vital that you remain healthy. The things you need to think about when you consider your health include maintaining a stable body temperature, rest, sunburn, blisters, bugs, ticks, and more. Taking care of your body will ensure your backpacking adventure is a lot of fun.

The most important thing is eating and drinking. You need to be sure you are getting plenty of fluids while you are backpacking. Water is the most important drink you should have with you. Be sure to have a good supply of water and stop often to fill up if you suspect it will be a while before you will be near a place to get more. If you are taking a backpacking trip and you do not have an itinerary then you should take enough water at least for a couple of days. Taking soda is a bad idea because it will only make you thirstier.

It is common for people who are backpacking to not eat after they have been hiking or walking for long distances. They are too tired and by the end of the night they would prefer just to sleep and eat when they wake up. This is a bad idea. You need to eat. Do not put eating off while you are backpacking. Take the time to eat healthy foods that will give you the energy you need. If you do not eat then you body will lose the energy it needs to go on.

If you or anyone in your group gets tired during your trip then you need to take the time to rest.
