HOW TO USE THIS BOOK OF GOD’S PROMISES

There is a wonderfully rich hymn that should be the anthem of every Christian. The refrain goes like this:

Standing, standing,

Standing on the promises of God my Savior;

Standing, standing,

I’m standing on the promises of God.1

This is the kind of song you sing at the top of your lungs when you’re faced with an eviction notice or pink slip, when you get that unexpected phone call or unwanted medical result. Russell Carter’s song is rooted in an encouraging promise from God’s Word that reminds us, “The earth and sky will wear out and fade away before one word I speak loses its power or fails to accomplish its purpose” (Matthew 24:35 TPT).

What a wonderful promise, one of many that God has spoken over your life. Did you know there are hundreds of similar guarantees from God for every one of your needs?

From fears to forgiveness, provision to protection, security and God’s ultimate salvation through his Son, these promises don’t change and are always true. They are for all people, for all time, because they reflect the character of God and his ultimate purpose: the all-embracing blessing and flourishing of the world in and through Jesus Christ.

At the center of all God’s promises is the Hebrew word berit, the word for “covenant.” It’s one of the Bible’s most important themes and crucial for unlocking numerous verses that remind us of what our heavenly Father has personally guaranteed.

Covenant is different from contract, because the intent is to form and solidify a relationship. It’s the difference between a business contract with your mortgage company and a marriage relationship with your spouse—in sickness and in health, till death parts you!

At the heart of covenant is a relationship between God and people, a relationship characterized by faithfulness and loyal love. While people are anything but faithful and loyal, the promises of the Bible are guaranteed because the God who created his berit has hesed.

English Bibles often translate hesed as “loving kindness” or “steadfast love.” These definitions really don’t capture the true nature of this rich Hebrew word, however. At the center of the character of God isn’t just loving kindness, but a fierce, faithful covenantal loyalty.

A passage from the book of Jonah captures best the true character of God, who is “a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity” (4:2 NIV). This refrain is repeated through the Hebrew Scriptures to remind those people and us today that God is loyal to the relationship he’s formed, a relationship formed by a covenant that has as its goal the ultimate restoration of the world.

The glue that binds all biblical covenants together is God’s re-creative purpose of universal divine blessing. With each of the Bible’s covenants—from Noah to Abraham, the kings to Israel, and to the Church—God has had one ultimate unifying goal: to restore this broken world to the way he originally envisioned it in the beginning before the fall.

That ultimate goal is what you should keep in mind as you explore this handbook and let it guide your life. All God’s promises are founded upon God’s ultimate plan: the one God, requiring obedience and loyalty from his special people, who are saved through his promised Savior and forgiven of their sins in order to be re-created anew.

What this means is that the gospel—God’s story of rescue and re-creation through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection—is at the heart of God’s promises. All God’s divine promises have their fulfillment in what the Father did in and through his Son on the cross, signing a new covenant in his blood!

This everlasting covenant absolutely guarantees God’s promises and purposes for our lives—both now and in the future. While Jesus’ death and resurrection set into motion the fulfillment of all God’s promises, we still await their ultimate, final fulfillment when everything will be made new!

But this gets to two important questions: Who are all God’s promises meant for, and which of his promises still matter today? Are they for those people in the Bible or can they be for us too? Yes!

Throughout the Bible we see that God gave promises to three groups of people: individuals (like Abraham and David), the nations (usually Israel), and every person (like you). Sometimes Bible teachers refer to these as general versus specific Bible promises.

General promises are ones God has given to every one of his people, in every age—first to Jews and then to non-Jews who’ve been “grafted in” to God’s family. In the Psalms, for instance, God promises to “never walk away from his people, never desert his precious people” (Psalm 94:14 MSG). While this promise was originally given to Israel, now Christians are also included because of Christ. God also promises that through Jesus, “We have redemption, the forgiveness of sins, in Him” (Colossians 1:14 HCSB). There are lots of these promises given to every person who is a child of God for every one of their needs!

A specific promise is something God promised to a specific person or group of people, mainly the children of Israel. For instance, early in Genesis God gave this promise to Abraham: “And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great” (Genesis 12:2 ESV). And in an often-quoted passage in Jeremiah, God promised Israel, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (29:11 NIV).

Understanding these two kinds of promises helps us discern how to apply the hundreds of guarantees found in God’s Word to our lives today. A few other principles will also help you:

1.Check the context. Often a promise is part of a bigger story, like Abraham’s or Israel’s. Referencing your Bible will help you determine the promise’s background.

2.Look for “if.” Some of God’s promises are conditional—meaning “if” you do something, “then” God will do something. This is important because many of God’s promises help us yield to his will in obedience.

3.Seek God’s Character. Whether a promise is general or specific, the character of God will be evident. This “character principle” will help you discern how God’s personal assurances are relevant and applicable to your own life.

Consider this verse on forgiveness: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV).

The surrounding context makes it clear that “my people” refers to Israel. There’s also a condition: If his people will humble themselves, pray, and repent, then God will hear, forgive, and heal them. While this specific promise was given to a specific group of people, we can see a broader “character principle” here: God is ready, willing, and able to forgive people of their sins and put them to right! So even though this is a specific promise, we can still claim it as our own when we need to feel and know God’s forgiveness.

How about the promise from Genesis 12 above, the one about God making Abraham a great nation? Does that mean God promises every person a house full of kids? Not exactly. Obviously this was a specific promise given to Abraham. Yet it reminds us that the God who provided a very old Abraham and Sarah a son is the same God who has a plan and purpose for you. The Holy Spirit often uses verses like this to show us that God really can be trusted with every ounce of our lives—even our families.

What you are holding is the ultimate handbook to every one of your needs, because it brings together in one place all the personal guarantees God has given to us in his Word. Here are a few things to keep in mind when using this handbook:

1.The more than 2,100 promises in this guide are arranged in 145 relevant life topics, and in alphabetical order—making it the perfect reference when you need God’s reassurance most.

2.Some people use promise books at certain moments when they are down and need to be encouraged, discouraged and need to be lifted up, or searching for a reminder of who God is and what he has promised to do for them. If this describes you, then simply flip to the topic that describes your need most.

3.Other people use these kinds of books as devotionals, choosing to start at the front and work their way to the back in order to learn more about God’s assurances and his character behind them. If you choose this route, keep a journal handy to jot down what you’re learning and how these specific promises apply to your life.

4.Regardless of how you approach this book, remember to pray and listen. We’ve chosen to only include Scripture, rather than devotional or verse study notes, because we believe in the power of God’s Word and Spirit to speak to us in our times of need and study.

5.Be open to how God might apply these promises to your specific needs. Even though a promise might have been specifically given to a person or to Israel, God often highlights Scriptures to us as we read, bringing direct application to our own lives.

6.Finally, be ready for God to reveal himself through these promise verses. Expect him to reveal his heart of love and loyalty and revelation-light to you in deeper ways. And be open to being challenged, corrected, and changed—even while you anticipate him to fulfilling his promises to you!

In the end, each of God’s promises aren’t about us and our needs—they’re about God, his character, and his divine purposes. The only reason we can stand on the promises of God at all is because he is fiercely loyal, overly gracious, quick to show compassion, slow to anger, and all loving.

The Bible describes God’s Word as a sword, a weapon you can use to combat your enemy. It is power, which means that by holding this book you are armed with a sure defense for any occasion. God’s promises will never lose their power or fail to accomplish their purpose in your life—all for his glory, purpose, and fame!

Stand upon the promises of God.

ABANDONMENT

God answered, “I will be with you. And this is your sign that I am the one who has sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God at this very mountain.”

EXODUS 3:12 NLT

My father and mother walked out and left me,

but GOD took me in.

PSALM 27:10 MSG

GOD will never walk away from his people,

never desert his precious people.

PSALM 94:14 MSG

For no one is abandoned

by the Lord forever.

LAMENTATIONS 3:31 NLT

We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.

2 CORINTHIANS 4:9 NLT

ABUNDANCE

“You may ask, ‘What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not plant or harvest our crops?’ I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years.”

LEVITICUS 25:20–21 NIV

How beautiful are your tents, Jacob,

your dwellings, Israel.

They stretch out like river valleys,

like gardens beside a stream,

like aloes the LORD has planted,

like cedars beside the water.

Water will flow from his buckets,

and his seed will be by abundant water.

His king will be greater than Agag,

and his kingdom will be exalted.

NUMBERS 24:5–7 HCSB

So it shall be, when the LORD your God brings you into the land of which He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you large and beautiful cities which you did not build, houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn-out wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant—when you have eaten and are full.

DEUTERONOMY 6:10–11 NKJV

GOD is about to bring you into a good land, a land with brooks and rivers, springs and lakes, streams out of the hills and through the valleys. It’s a land of wheat and barley, of vines and figs and pomegranates, of olives, oil, and honey. It’s a land where you’ll never go hungry—always food on the table and a roof over your head. It’s a land where you’ll get iron out of rocks and mine copper from the hills.

DEUTERONOMY 8:7–9 MSG

But the land that you are going over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water by the rain from heaven, a land that the LORD your God cares for. The eyes of the LORD your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.

DEUTERONOMY 11:11–12 ESV

The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.

DEUTERONOMY 28:8 NIV

The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.

DEUTERONOMY 28:11 NIV

GOD will throw open the doors of his sky vaults and pour rain on your land on schedule and bless the work you take in hand. You will lend to many nations but you yourself won’t have to take out a loan. GOD will make you the head, not the tail; you’ll always be the top dog, never the bottom dog, as you obediently listen to and diligently keep the commands of GOD, your God, that I am commanding you today.

DEUTERONOMY 28:12–13 MSG

All may drink of the anointing from the abundance of your house!

All may drink their fill from the delightful springs of Eden.

PSALM 36:8 TPT

Your visitations of glory bless the earth;

the rivers of God overflow and enrich it.

You paint the wheat fields golden as you provide rich harvests.

PSALM 65:9 TPT

Honor the LORD with your wealth

and with the best part of everything you produce.

Then he will fill your barns with grain,

and your vats will overflow with good wine.

PROVERBS 3:9–10 NLT

Those who work their land will have abundant food,

but those who chase fantasies have no sense.

PROVERBS 12:11 NIV

The lovers of God will have more than enough,

but the wicked will always lack what they crave.

PROVERBS 13:25 TPT

Yes, there will be an abundance of flowers

and singing and joy!

The deserts will become as green as the mountains of Lebanon,

as lovely as Mount Carmel or the plain of Sharon.

There the LORD will display his glory,

the splendor of our God.

ISAIAH 35:2 NLT

“In those days people will live in the houses they build

and eat the fruit of their own vineyards.”

ISAIAH 65:21 NLT

This is what the LORD says:

“I will give Jerusalem a river of peace and prosperity.

The wealth of the nations will flow to her.

Her children will be nursed at her breasts,

carried in her arms, and held on her lap.”

ISAIAH 66:12 NLT

“I will satisfy the priests with abundance,

and my people will be filled with my bounty,”

declares the LORD.

JEREMIAH 31:14 NIV

The threshing floors will be full of grain,

and the vats will overflow

with new wine and olive oil.

JOEL 2:24 HCSB

I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge

1 CORINTHIANS 1:5 NIV

For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you.

2 CORINTHIANS 9:10 NLT

Everything heaven contains has already been lavished upon us as a love gift from our wonderful heavenly Father, the Father of our Lord Jesus—all because he sees us wrapped into Christ. This is why we celebrate him with all our hearts!

EPHESIANS 1:3 TPT

ACCEPTANCE

The LORD is a friend to those who fear him.

He teaches them his covenant.

PSALM 25:14 NLT

“For a brief moment I abandoned you,

but with great compassion I will take you back.”

ISAIAH 54:7 NLT

And you did not receive the “spirit of religious duty,” leading you back into the fear of never being good enough. But you have received the “Spirit of Full Acceptance,” enfolding you into the family of God. And you will never feel orphaned, for as he rises up within us, our spirits join him in saying the words of tender affection, “Beloved Father, Abba!”

ROMANS 8:15 TPT

Remember the prophecy God gave in Hosea:

“To those who were rejected and not my people,

I will say to them: ‘You are mine.’

And to those who were unloved I will say:

‘You are my darling.’”

ROMANS 9:25 TPT

Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.

GALATIANS 4:7 NLT

ADOPTION

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

ROMANS 8:14 NLT

The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children, and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ—seeing that we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

ROMANS 8:16–17 HCSB

It is not merely the natural offspring of Abraham who are considered the children of God; rather, the children born because of God’s promise are counted as descendants.

ROMANS 9:8 TPT

“I will be a Father to you,

And you shall be My sons and daughters,

Says the LORD Almighty.”

2 CORINTHIANS 6:18 NKJV

But when that era came to an end and the time of fulfillment had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the written law. Yet all of this was so that he would redeem and set free all those held hostage to the written law so that we would receive our freedom and a full legal adoption as his children.

GALATIANS 4:4–5 TPT

God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

EPHESIANS 1:5 NLT

But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hoped in which we glory.

HEBREWS 3:6 NIV

What marvelous love the Father has extended to us! Just look at it—we’re called children of God! That’s who we really are. But that’s also why the world doesn’t recognize us or take us seriously, because it has no idea who he is or what he’s up to.

1 JOHN 3:1 MSG

ANGER

A gentle answer deflects anger,

but harsh words make tempers flare.

PROVERBS 15:1 NLT

Good sense makes one slow to anger,

and it is his glory to overlook an offense.

PROVERBS 19:11 ESV

Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.

JAMES 1:20 NLT

ANXIETY

Surrender your anxiety!

Be silent and stop your striving

and you will see that I am God.

I am the God above all the nations,

and I will be exalted throughout the whole earth.

PSALM 46:11 TPT

“So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For the idolaters eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”

MATTHEW 6:31–32 HCSB

“Listen to me. Never let anxiety enter your hearts. Never worry about any of your needs, such as food or clothing. For your life is infinitely more than just food or the clothing you wear.”

LUKE 12:22–23 TPT

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 PETER 5:7 NIV

ASSURANCE

“Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”

GENESIS 18:14 NIV

GOD said, “And who do you think made the human mouth? And who makes some mute, some deaf, some sighted, some blind? Isn’t it I, GOD? So, get going. I’ll be right there with you—with your mouth! I’ll be right there to teach you what to say.”

EXODUS 4:11–12 MSG

The LORD replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

EXODUS 33:14 NIV

The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD’s power limited? You will see whether or not what I have promised will happen to you.”

NUMBERS 11:23 HCSB

God is not man, that he should lie,

or a son of man, that he should change his mind.

Has he said, and will he not do it?

Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

NUMBERS 23:19 ESV

“No misfortune is seen in Jacob,

no misery observed in Israel.

The LORD their God is with them;

the shout of the King is among them.”

NUMBERS 23:21 NIV

“No magic spells can bind Jacob,

no incantations can hold back Israel.

People will look at Jacob and Israel and say,

‘What a great thing has God done!’”

NUMBERS 23:23 MSG

ATONEMENT

“For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.”

LEVITICUS 17:11 NIV

“The priest is to make atonement for the whole Israelite community, and they will be forgiven, for it was not intentional and they have presented to the LORD for their wrong a food offering and a sin offering. The whole Israelite community and the foreigners residing among them will be forgiven, because all the people were involved in the unintentional wrong.”

NUMBERS 15:25–26 NIV

“I will establish My covenant with you, and you will know that I am Yahweh, so that when I make atonement for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed, and never open your mouth again because of your disgrace.” This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.

EZEKIEL 16:62–63 HCSB

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 JOHN 2:1–2 NIV

AUTHORITY

“I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.”

DEUTERONOMY 18:18–19 ESV

So the LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him. Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the LORD. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”

NUMBERS 27:18–21 NIV

All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the LORD your God said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.”

1 CHRONICLES 11:1–2 NIV

BELIEF

Therefore the Lord GOD said:

“Look, I have laid a stone in Zion,

a tested stone,

a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;

the one who believes will be unshakable.”

ISAIAH 28:16 HCSB

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

MARK 9:23 NKJV

Jesus shouted out passionately, “To believe in me is to believe in God who sent me. For when you look at me you are seeing the One who sent me. I have come as a light to shine in this dark world so that all who trust in me will no longer wander in darkness.”

JOHN 12:44–46 TPT

“Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

JOHN 20:29 NIV

Jesus ordered us to preach and warn the people that God had appointed him to be the judge of the living and the dead. And not only us, but all of the prophets agree in their writings that everyone who believes in him receives complete forgiveness of sins through the power of his name.

ACTS 10:42–43 TPT

But to the one who does not work, but believes on Him who declares the ungodly to be righteous, his faith is credited for righteousness.

ROMANS 4:5 HCSB

“See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble

and a rock that makes them fall,

and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”

ROMANS 9:33 NIV

For the Scriptures encourage us with these words:

“Everyone who believes in him will never be disappointed.”

ROMANS 10:11 TPT

Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe.

1 CORINTHIANS 1:21 NLT

I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

1 JOHN 5:13 HCSB

BELONGING

“You will be My people,

and I will be your God.”

JEREMIAH 30:22 HCSB

“However, your real source of joy isn’t merely that these spirits submit to your authority, but that your names are written in the journals of heaven and that you belong to God’s kingdom. This is the true source of your authority.”

LUKE 10:20 TPT

Jesus, the Holy One, makes us holy. And as sons and daughters, we now belong to his same Father, so he is not ashamed or embarrassed to introduce us as his brothers and sisters!

HEBREWS 2:11 TPT
