Introduction

We know from Scripture that we should think about things that are lovely, good, and pure. But how do we find this in a world that appears to be unraveling at the seams?

This morning and evening devotional will encourage you to spend the beginning and end of your day with God, experiencing his goodness and being refreshed in his presence. From the time you wake up, until the time you fall into bed at night, let your mind dwell on all that is excellent, and give thanks to your Creator who has blessed you with so much.

Remember the greatness of God as you continually fix your eyes on his truth.

JANUARY 1

A Blank Canvas

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

GENESIS 1:1-2 ESV

In the beginning God created all things from a blank canvas; the possibilities were endless! Does the thought of a new year create excitement or apprehension about the unknown possibilities and opportunities?

A blank canvas can be a good opportunity to dwell on what you really want to do this year and think about how God can use your personality, skills, and talents. As you head into your day allow yourself to explore what God has in store for you and let him fill you with encouragement for the year ahead.

Father, I want to thank you for a new year, for a new day. Thank you for the opportunity to start again in many areas of my life. Give me courage for today and for the year ahead.

God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

GENESIS 1:3-5 ESV

In the beginning there was darkness, but God brought the light. The light was the beginning of the rest of God’s magnificent creative work.

Have you been able to see God in your circumstances today? Have you seen his light in areas that you have kept in the dark? Think about God’s goodness for you today and the hope that his light in your life will bring about more wonderful things for you this year.

God, I bring areas of darkness to you in my life and in the life of those around me, and I ask for your light to shine. Bring hope where I see none and restore life to my soul.

Where do you need to see God’s light in your life this year?

JANUARY 2

Imago Dei

God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

GENESIS 1:26 ESV

God created you in his image. Have you ever pondered what this really means? God intended for you and the rest of humanity to demonstrate what he is like to the rest of the world; to display the goodness of the Creator and to represent his name. That’s a big task.

Remember that it isn’t what you strive to do, it’s who you are, so be encouraged today that you are representing your Creator just by being you.

God, it seems like a really big thing to be bearing your image, but I thank you that you created me and you love me as I am. I pray despite my imperfections I would still be able to reflect you in my life toward others today.

God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them.

GENESIS 1:27-28 ESV

Was your day full of peace and love or have you had moments of quarrelling and tension? No matter what way it went, you are loved by God and his grace allows you to continue to be like him.

An image in ancient days were idols made from human hands with no life in them. We are a different image from any manmade thing because the God of this universe breathed life into us. We are alive, just as he is alive.

God, I need you to breathe new life into areas of my life where I am not fully representing the person you have created me to be. I choose to look ahead to the renewal that is going to take place in my heart and in my life.

What area of your life do you feel you need to reflect God more?

JANUARY 3

Very Good Work

The heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.

GENESIS 2:1-2 ESV

It must have taken a lot of energy for God to create this universe, this world, and the complexity that is humanity. God also planned rest into his creative work. After he had finished his very good work he rested.

As you go through your day, your various working activities will require energy from you. Think about God’s intention for rest after hard work; he knows what is best for us. Take a few moments to rest from your very good work.

God, I thank you for the day ahead. I ask for your energy to get some very good work done. I pray that you would give me moments of rest so I can be restored to do more work that will bring glory to you.

God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

GENESIS 2:3 ESV

At the end of a long day it’s easy to feel a little down because your energy has been depleted.

You may have had very little time for yourself today, but now you have a moment to sit and reflect on the goodness of God with the idea that he wants you to be here right now and rest in him. God took a whole day out of his work to rest.

God, I thank you for this moment of rest, this time to be restored by reflecting on being like you and resting like you did. I pray for your strength; I pray for great sleep so I am ready to face another day.

What day can you take this week that will allow you to have time to rest?

JANUARY 4

Hiding

They heard the sound of the LORDGod walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORDGod among the trees of the garden.

GENESIS 3:8 ESV

It would have been a hard day for Adam and Eve, the day they were deceived and made the choice to disobey God. They were so ashamed that they hid, although they must have known that they would be found.

We all know what shame feels like, when we have committed wrong toward someone else. We want to run from our problems and not face those we have hurt, and yet the truth cannot escape us. Can you face your day with boldness, knowing that truth and owning up to your mistakes is better than hiding?

Jesus, I am going to need your help today to make sure that I don’t hide from my mistakes, and to know that your presence is always there, not to condemn, but to give me grace.

The LORDGod called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”

GENESIS 3:9-10 ESV

Were there any mistakes or arguments in your day that made you feel like covering up or hiding? We aren’t often very good at taking ownership of our wrongdoings, and sometimes we think that ignoring them is the easiest way out.

Perhaps you have been hurt by someone and are waiting for them to apologize. Whatever the wrongdoing, notice that God is all about restoration. In the garden, it was God who went to find Adam and Eve. He didn’t wait for them to come out from hiding; he sought them out. Don’t be afraid, and don’t hide. God will always seek to restore relationship with you and with others.

God, there is a lot of brokenness around me, and sometimes I just want to carry on and try to hide from my own sin. Thank you for your forgiveness, for your grace, and for restoring relationship with me.

What relationship do you need God to restore to you? If you need forgiveness, approach God—he is for you, not against you.

JANUARY 5

Colorful Promises

God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.”

GENESIS 9:12-13 ESV

Rainbows are beautiful wonders of nature that bring joy to those fortunate enough to see them. They come from a combination of rain and sun, and it is easy to see why God put such a beautiful reminder in the sky of his goodness.

Your day may be filled with some pain and some joy. Remember that the combination of different aspects can be turned into a beautiful reminder of God’s promise to remember his children and to show them his lovingkindness.

Father, I need your lovingkindness in my life today. Whether I experience rain or shine, or a little of both, I pray I would see your beauty working in and through me.

“When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.”

GENESIS 9:14-15 ESV

It grieves God’s heart to see his children in pain. It is good to remind ourselves that while we do not understand the ways of God, we believe in his goodness and knowledge of his creation to know what is best for the world.

When the waters of life seem to be rising higher and higher, don’t panic. God has made a promise to keep you from drowning. Trust in him.

God, after a long day I am feeling overwhelmed. Help me to remember your promise to always be with me and to help me get through each and every day. Give me rest as I go to bed and give me hope for a new day.

What pressure are you feeling today that is causing you anxiety? Think of the rainbow that God put in the sky and remember that his promises are for you.

JANUARY 6

The Good Portion

Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kinsmen.”

GENESIS 13:8 ESV

Abram and his nephew Lot had been on a long journey together to reach the land that God had promised them. When they got there, Abram had a choice to make; there was good land and there was very good land. Abram chose peace over greed and gave the very good land to his nephew. As a result, God blessed Abram abundantly.

You may have some choices to make today that will require you to give up something that seems very good for the sake of someone else. Let God bless you as you practice generosity.

Thank you, God, for the many blessings of this life. I pray that if an opportunity comes today to be generous to someone else that you would remind me of your generosity toward me.

“Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.”

GENESIS 13:9 ESV

Have you had to put aside your need or desire in order to benefit someone else today? Or did you lose the opportunity because you didn’t want to give it up?

Either way God is still on your side and will be with you whether you are an Abram or a Lot. Allow God to continue to work on gifting you with a generous spirit.

God, I don’t always get it right and I am particularly challenged to have to give up opportunities for the benefit of those around me. I pray you would remind me of your love and immeasurable goodness so I will have the desire to give more to others.

In what ways do you find it hard to be generous toward others? Is it money, patience, or a better opportunity? Allow yourself to be challenged to give more.

JANUARY 7

Righteous through Faith

Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the LORDcame to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.”

GENESIS 15:3-4 ESV

It sounds a little bit like Abram was complaining when he reminded God that he had been given no offspring. Does this sound like your complaints at times?

What are you praying for that you feel like God has not given you, yet? Be encouraged by the Lord’s response to Abram and know that God will answer you in his time.

God, there are things in my life that I am still waiting for and sometimes I feel as though you have neglected my desires. I choose to trust you today, and submit my desires to you, knowing that you care enough to answer me.

He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

GENESIS 15:5-6 ESV

This is the famous place in the Bible where we understand that it isn’t about what we say or do that saves us, rather, it is what we believe. Abram and Sarah would have undoubtedly felt skeptical that God would give them as many descendants as the stars in the sky as they wrestled with having even one child in their old age.

What God says is truth, and his Word did not come back void. Somewhere along the line, Abram chose to believe and his heart of belief, God said, made him righteous.

God, as I ponder your amazing miracle for Abram and Sarah, I see your goodness and truth. I pray that you would do miraculous things in my life, and that I would have the faith to believe in your Word.

What do you need to believe God for tonight?

JANUARY 8

Well Pleased

Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.

MATTHEW 3:13-15 ESV

Jesus didn’t just come to the world to show us perfection, he also came to show us a new way of life. Of course he didn’t need to be baptized, he was God. He chose, however, to model what our righteousness was all about.

John baptized Jesus to represent how our old life can die with Christ and rise again. You will probably be challenged in some way today, to put behind your old self and to live in the new life Jesus has given you. Are you up for this challenge?

Jesus, thank you for showing me that you made a way for me to live a better life. I know you don’t require perfection, so I ask that you remind me, as I face challenges today, to be a person of the new life you demonstrated to us.

When Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

MATTHEW 3:16-17 ESV

When you get to the end of the day you can feel a sense of accomplishment knowing that you achieved a few things and simply got through the day without any major catastrophe.

Sometimes you may have even gone that one step above and remembered to show love in some way to someone around you—you lived in the new life that Christ has given you. Well done. Let yourself be encouraged that the Father says these same words to you, just as he did to his beloved Son: “Child, I am well pleased with you.”

Father, sometimes I feel as though I don’t deserve your praise. Thank you that you have a different view. Thank you that you see me with love and acceptance and that simply because I am your child, you are well pleased with me.

Can you imagine these words being just for you? Reflect on your day and let God show you the heart attitude that he was well pleased with.

Hard to Resist

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”

MATTHEW 4:8-9 ESV

The world can offer a lot of great things. Careers offer success, relationships offer security, and riches can provide comfort. Nothing is inherently wrong with having these things, unless they are used for our own glory.

In the world, people want to glorify themselves. This is what the devil was after, too. He wanted to be worshiped. Thankfully, Jesus knew that the kingdoms of this world were nothing like the kingdom of God. He chose something greater. Are you able to resist the temptation of the world today?

God, thank you that you understand the temptations in this world. Please strengthen me for the day ahead and remind me that your kingdom is better than all the false glory that may come my way.

Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the LORDyour God and him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

MATTHEW 4:10-11 ESV

There are many pressures in the day to serve things other than God’s kingdom. Have you found yourself tempted to buy something new but not needed? Have you booked another beauty appointment because you feel like you can’t show anyone your flaws? Did you say yes to just one more thing that you don’t have time for because you didn’t want to look bad by saying no?

We need to reassess our decisions in light of who we are serving—is it God, or humans? The Bible says we should only worship the Lord our God. Tell the devil who is boss and let God minister to you as you resist temptation.

God, I am sorry for becoming distracted with desiring the things of this world. Help me to say no to temptation and worship only you. Minister to me now as I rest in your presence.

What is drawing you away from worshiping God and him alone?

JANUARY 10

Jesus Heals

Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.

MATTHEW 4:23 NASB

It is hard to understand how and when God heals his children. Have you prayed for healing recently and haven’t got any better? Do you know someone around you that is unwell and not recovering? It can be disheartening when you are sick, or see others that you care about not improving.

Our faith does not need to be great, but through our belief in Jesus, we can also acknowledge our belief in the miracles that he performed. Jesus showed us that what we think is impossible is not impossible with God.

Jesus, I pray for healing in my life and in the life of those who are unwell around me. I know you cared for others and had compassion to heal, but I also recognize that sometimes you don’t answer us exactly how we want. Help me to trust that you are always good, no matter what.

News about him spread as far as Syria, and people soon began bringing to him all who were sick. And whatever their sickness or disease, or if they were demon possessed or epileptic or paralyzed—he healed them all.

MATTHEW 4:24 NASB

Sometimes healing doesn’t come, and we need to trust that God is still faithful and gracious. He will restore perfect health to us in eternity.

We may have to wait for healing and we may never really know why. But let us still be encouraged today to believe in a God of miracles, and pray with all our might that he will bring healing to the sick.

God, I do trust that you are faithful and gracious. I believe there are times that you have healed me, or those around me, and I believe that you have also kept me safe in times I wasn’t even aware of. Thank you for your enduring love.

Are you praying for healing for yourself or someone else? Can you see God’s goodness in that situation?

JANUARY 11

Empty but Blessed

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

MATTHEW 5:3-4 NIV

There are days where you might wake up a little more sluggish, with a little less energy and positivity about the day. That can feel kind of empty, a gap you’re hoping to fill.

The great thing about the God you serve is that in him, you can be complete. He can be that gap-filler. As you sit with him, his light begins to burn brighter.

God, lift me up this morning. It’s hard to get out of bed and sometimes I feel anxious or worried about the day ahead. Give me energy and strength to face another day.

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

MATTHEW 5:5-6 NIV

On this particular day, meet God in dependence. Come to him even when you don’t feel like it. Present your helplessness and emptiness to him and he will bless you and fill your gap with warmth, joy, peace, care, and love.

As you spend time with God tonight, allow him to speak to you and rest knowing you were transformed and filled on one of the hardest days. He is faithful and loving no matter our circumstance or feeling.

I’m glad to be here in your presence tonight, God. It is a struggle for me to just sit down and think about you when my mind is so full of other things. As I seek you, let the things of this earth grow dim in the light of your glory.

Have you seen the fruit of this promise on one of your rough days?

JANUARY 12

Salt and Light

“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.”

MATTHEW 5:13 NLT

You are blessed simply because you believe in Jesus and have eternal life. When Jesus was speaking to the disciples, he wanted them to know that this very good thing that they had received needed to be shared.

There is no point to a life in Christ if we lose the one thing that makes us different from the world. God wants you to display a life that shows how wonderful salvation is. Can you be like salt in an otherwise bland world today?

Jesus, thank you that you blessed me with the gift of salvation. Let my words and heart attitude toward activities and people be an expression of this gift so I don’t just blend in with everyone else. Let my life be that point of difference that makes people wonder why I have peace and joy.

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.”

MATTHEW 5:14-15 NLT

As you prepare yourself for bed tonight, the last thing you will probably do is turn out the lights. You need the light to see everything you are doing until then. You need the light to show you the way. There would be no point of turning on the light only to cover it up.

This is our journey of salvation. Jesus didn’t want you to receive his light and then hide it. He wants you to shine brightly so others will also see the path to faith.

Father, as I reflect on those places where I have hidden my light, I thank you for your grace. I know that you understand and that you want to give me the boldness to live out my faith as brightly as I can. I pray that as I greet the light tomorrow, I would be ready to shine alongside it.

Where have you hidden your light lately? What situations make you want to hide instead of shine?

JANUARY 13

Love All

“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!”

MATTHEW 5:43-44 NLT

The ways of this world are different from the ways of the kingdom. Jesus made this clear by contrasting what the world says to do with your enemies and what Christ-followers should do. You probably have people in your mind that you see as a threat, or those who are unkind toward you. Sometimes we even get mocked for our faith, whether overtly or subtly. These are the very people who Christ asks us to love.

It’s not easy to pray for those who have hurt you. Jesus understands this; he had to forgive all who brought him to his painful death on the cross. Allow Christ to be your strength as you practice goodness to those who have wronged you.

God, I need your help with loving my enemies. Give me your heart for them. Help me to see that everyone is loved by you, no matter what they do or say. I don’t accept their wrong behavior, but I choose today to pray for their healing, forgiveness, and restoration.

“In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.”

MATTHEW 5:45 NLT

It can seem unfair that good people suffer and those seemingly less deserving prosper. Jesus wanted us to recognize the Father heart of God for all his children, even those who reject him.

God loves unconditionally and when we show impartiality for all his creation, even those who seem bad, we know that we are being the true children of God, imitating his love for all humankind.

Lord Jesus, forgive me for a heart that cannot always see your love for all people. Help me to love these people who feel like enemies. Give me the grace to change my ways.

Who are your enemies? Is there anyone that needs an extra measure of grace and forgiveness from you?

JANUARY 14

When You Pray

“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”

MATTHEW 6:5 NIV

Cherish the secret things. So much of our life is for others. Whether it is the requirement of jobs, keeping up relationships, or the programs we volunteer for, so much of our time and energy is spent on other people.

God wants our time. He wants it for us and for him. Maybe this will require a designated prayer closet, or a quiet place away.

God, I pray that I don’t become religious with the way that I spend time with you. I want to engage with you at any moment of any day, and I don’t need it to be loud and pretentious. Let me be genuine in my prayers to you today.

“When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

MATTHEW 6:6 NIV

Were you able to head to a quiet place with your Bible and journal tonight? You might be reading this with noise all around you.

However you get your time, your heavenly Father sees you. What a faithful gift that thought is; he sees you in secret and will meet you where you are.

God, I have this time with you right now. I know it’s not much, but after a long day, it’s all I have. Thank you that you see me. Thank you that we don’t have to make a fuss about this time, but it’s something that we can both enjoy without trying to let everyone else in on it.

Can you get away today in secret to pray? In secret, God will reward your heart. Make slipping away with him a daily routine.

JANUARY 15

Your Treasure

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

MATTHEW 6:19-20 ESV

Have you ever been sitting on a beach and watched a little child work tirelessly on an elaborate sand castle? These little children are unaware of the patterns of ocean waves and don’t realize that as the day passes, their masterpieces will eventually be swept away by the swelling tide. All that work, all that concentration, all that pride, gone as the water erases the shore.

What castles are we building in our lives that could, at any moment, be simply erased? We must know what can last and what won’t. There are temporary kingdoms and a kingdom that will never pass away. We have to recognize which one we are contributing to.

God, I want to build meaningful things for your kingdom. Give me the discernment to know what is truly of worth to you.

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

MATTHEW 6:21 ESV

If your work and your heart are invested in a heavenly vision, then what you have spent your life on will continue to matter for longer than you live.

Spend your time investing in the eternal souls of people, in the eternal vision of advancing God’s kingdom, and in the never-ending truth of the Gospel. In these things you will find purpose and treasure that will never be lost.

Father God, I know that you have created my life with meaning and purpose. Help me to see how the gifts that you have given me matter in terms of eternity. Let me see the value of all my time, energy, and talent.

What are you putting your time, energy, and talents into? Are they being used for God’s glory?

JANUARY 16

Under His Care

“Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?”

MATTHEW 6:26 NLT

When you wake up in the morning you can begin to feel anxious about the day ahead. What will you wear? What do you need to organize? Will you make it in time to your important appointment?

Life is so full that we can feel overwhelmed with worry about getting it all done, and getting it all done right. Jesus didn’t want us to feel like that. God cares for us and takes care of a lot of the small things that we probably don’t realize he has had a hand in. Recognize his work in your life today, and head into it with confidence.

God, I need you right by my side today. Thank you for all the small things that you take care of. Thank you that you are a Father who loves to take care of me.

“Why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.”

MATTHEW 6:28-29

What is it about coming home after a long day that makes you want to change into something more comfortable? You may have already done that and are ready to relax.

Sometimes we need to be reminded that we even have this option. We are privileged that God not only looks after our basic needs but often blesses us with more than that.

Father, thank you for taking care of me. Thank you that not only do I have my basic needs met, but that you bless me with other beautiful things. Help me to express more gratitude for all my blessings.

What blessings are you thankful for? Where can you see God’s provision in your life today?

JANUARY 17

Hope in the Storm

“All who listen to my instructions and follow them are wise, like a man who builds his house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents, and the floods rise and the storm winds beat against his house, it won’t collapse, for it is built on rock.”

MATTHEW 7:24-25 TLB

Jesus didn’t just give instructions on how to live so we could be nice people. There are nice people everywhere: believers and unbelievers alike. He gave us ways to live so we could walk through the storms with peace and joy in our hearts.

Our confidence is not in everything that is happening around us; it is in knowing that with Christ we have a new, eternal life. That knowledge is our solid foundation.

God, thank you for reminding me that a life lived your way is a life that is able to weather all kinds of storms that may come my way. Help me to live by your instructions and to be wise so I will always carry the hope of eternity in all circumstances.

“Those who hear my instructions and ignore them are foolish, like a man who builds his house on sand. For when the rains and floods come, and storm winds beat against his house, it will fall with a mighty crash.”

MATTHEW 7:26-27 TLB

When we ignore God’s ways, we also ignore the hope that he has placed in our hearts for his eternal kingdom. Forgetting to live with this eternal perspective means that even the smallest of storms can beat us down, making us feel discouraged and hopeless.

As you take this time to think about your day, reflect on whether you have been facing your challenges with hope or despair.

God, I have faced a few challenges this week and I know there are times when I have responded with despair and a lack of hope. Remind me that the knowledge of a new, restored life is the very thing that will keep my head above the water. Give me joy and peace in all circumstances.

How have you been responding to the storms of life this week?

JANUARY 18

He’s the One

“Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them.”

MATTHEW 11:4-5 NRSV

There were many people in Jesus’ time who wanted to know if Jesus was truly the one they had been waiting for. Jesus had been prophesied about and although many wanted to believe he was the one, they still had doubts. Even John the Baptist asked if Jesus really was the one.

It is good to remind ourselves that Jesus really is the one that came to save us all from the curse of sin. He is our redeemer, he is the one who brought healing and salvation to the world. You might need that solid reminder today. Read this Scripture in faith—Jesus is the one.

Jesus, at times I have doubts about my faith and sometimes it seems like my life is taken over by a different reality. Restore my faith today so I can live out a life that is completely convinced that you are the one.

“Blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.”

MATTHEW 11:6 NRSV

It can be easy to have a day full of wondering where God is in the middle of it all. We can admit that sometimes this faith in Christ seems absurd. We feel a form of persecution in the world when we hear others laugh about Christianity or find a way to blame religion for all the wrong in the world.

To the world, the message of the cross is offensive. To those of us who believe, we find the message of Christ our true fulfilment because it is a message full of hope, peace, and joy.

God, sometimes I don’t even understand why I believe all that I do about you. I know that you can handle my doubt, but I ask that you restore an unwavering faith to me so I feel blessed that I am living in the truth.

Have you had moments today or this week of feeling like your faith has taken a knock?

JANUARY 19

One in a Hundred

“What do you think? If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying?”

MATTHEW 18:12 NASB

Regardless of how beautifully or how imperfectly your earthly father showed his love, your heavenly Father’s love is utterly boundless. Rest in that thought a moment. There is nothing you can do to change how he feels about you.

It’s easy to forget we are already perfectly loved. Our Father loves you more than you can imagine. And he would do anything for you. Remember that throughout your day.

God, thank you that you care so much about me. At times, I have been that one lost sheep and you have come to find me. Thank you for your love for me.

“If it turns out that he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray. So it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones perish.”

MATTHEW 12:13-14 NASB

You might have had a rough day, or maybe a really good day. Remember that your heavenly Father has been loving you throughout all of your day.

Who do you love most fiercely, most protectively, most desperately here on earth? What would you do for them? Know that it’s a mere fraction, nearly immeasurable, of what God would do for you. Spend some time thanking him for his great love.

Father, I know that you will always search me out, no matter where I try to go. Help me to stay close to you so I can always bring you joy. Let me rest in your care for me as I go to sleep.

Are there areas of your life that you feel lost? Let Jesus take care of those things.

JANUARY 20

Gathered Together

“I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you.”

MATTHEW 18:19 NLT

When was the last time you felt spiritually recharged from conversation or prayer with other Christians? Sometimes going to church or a Bible study seems like just another thing to add to your list of things to do.

Are you giving yourself an opportunity to be uplifted by other believers or to be an encouragement to those around you? Remember that God promises to be with you when you are gathered together in his name. Is there a gathering that you can commit yourself to this week? Make an effort to go so you can experience the rich rewards of fellowship.

Father God, sometimes I feel too tired to go to something else. Give me energy to say yes to something this week that I know will be good for me and good for others.

“Where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

MATTHEW 18:20 NLT

God is a relational God. He knows that we need each other, and that life is better together. As a Christian, it is especially important to share time with other believers.

When we make time to pray together, study the Bible together, and share our faith stories, we can be supported, encouraged, and strengthened.

God, thank you for creating others in my life. I have so many wonderful friends and I really do love my family. Help me to encourage those who have faith and to be a witness of your love to those who do not.

Take a moment this evening to make a mental list of all the things you are involved in. Are these things encouraging you in your faith? Are they resulting in rewarding relationships?

JANUARY 21

The Burden of Riches

“If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

MATTHEW 19:21 NASB

If only I had more money! The thought runs through our minds frequently, and though we may actually have enough to be content with, we are often thinking about what we could do with more.

Wherever you stand financially, you probably have a goal of accumulating more wealth than you have now. But did you ever notice how the Bible seems to view earthly riches as actually getting in the way of our relationships with God and others?

God today I will probably have to deal with money. Help me to show integrity and generosity in paying bills, shopping, and even in earning money. Show me ways that I can be generous too.

When the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

MATTHEW 19:22 NASB

Wealth is rarely what we hope it is; the more we have, the more we have to lose. Jesus wanted the rich man to have a compassionate heart—one that was willing to give up what he had for the sake of the kingdom. To do this, he would have needed to give up the life that he was accustomed to.

Before asking God to bless you with wealth, ask him to bless you with a heart of giving.

Heavenly Father, thank you that you have given me more than enough. Help me to be content with what I have and to think more of others than myself. Bring generosity and compassion into my heart.

Are there areas where God is asking you to be more generous?

JANUARY 22

First and Greatest

One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the LORDyour God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’”

MATTHEW 22:35-37 NIV

The Pharisees were always trying to trip up Jesus. They wanted nothing more than to find fault with him—a reason to put him on trial or do away with him. So when they asked him which of all the commandments was the greatest, they were hoping that he would somehow fail to come up with the correct answer.

Instead, as usual, Jesus got it right. When we love the Lord our God with all our hearts, everything else falls into place. The other commandments are easy to follow.

God, I know that you desire relationship above everything else. Help me to love you and love others with all my heart.

“This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

MATTHEW 22:38-39 NIV

Have you given all of yourself to him? Do you love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind?

Let the last of your walls crumble, and give him all of you tonight.

Jesus, it’s hard to say that I love you with everything because I know the truth is that I so often get distracted by everything else. I know that you see my heart, and you know my desire is to love you with my entire being.

What do you need to give up so you can put God first?

JANUARY 23

It’s a Mission

“Behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”

EXODUS 3:9-10 NKJV

Have you ever felt as though God gave you a task that was way too big for you to handle? After Moses had seen God in the burning bush, he was asked to take the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt and away from the grips of Pharaoh. This was going to be an amazing victory for the Israelites, but it required a huge amount of effort on the part of Moses.

What has God put on your agenda for this day, for this week, for this year? Does it feel like it is too big for you? God wants to do amazing things through you.

God, today I feel overwhelmed at the thought of the mission that you have put before me. I know that there are good things ahead but I feel apprehensive. Give me boldness and clarity to approach this day with courage.

Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” So He said, “I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”

EXODUS 3:11-12 NKJV

Moses was understandably afraid and cautious about the mission God had set before him. Even after he had seen God in a flame-filled bush.

We need to remember the amazing things God has already done for us and know that he is with us to do more amazing things. God never asks us to do things in our own strength; he simply wants us to take part in what he has the strength to accomplish.

Jesus, thank you that as I think about what you’ve done in my life I realize there have been wonderful small miracles and amazing things along the way. As I spend time with you right now I pray I would understand that your presence and power is what will enable me to do great things.

What is one truly amazing thing that God has done for you?

JANUARY 24

Push Through

Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “Thus says the LORD,
