Flitty’s Fright

Colin the Cockroach is one of the friendliest little chaps in wood. He is also one of the naughtiest, never ever doing what his Mummy and Daddy told him. Every day Mummy told him that it is very dangerous for them to wander off too far from their home under the big oak tree as most other animals and insects don’t really like cockroaches and they have to be especially careful of people. Colin had eaten his breakfast in the usual rush and was going outside to find his friends to play with, of course not listening to his Mummy’s advice at all. Colin’s best friend Billy the beetle was waiting outside Colin’s home having had his breakfast and gone out even earlier than Colin, and he was puffing and panting as he had just ran all the way across the pathway from his home in the old gardeners shed near to the big park.

“Hello Billy, what on earth is wrong with you, and why are you puffing so much” Colin asked. “Well I was just strolling along the path to come and call for you Colin when a huge silly dog chased me all the way here” he replied gasping for breath.

“Oh dear lets sneak along this side of the path to have a look” Colin suggested rather daringly. “Oh no, I don’t know about that Colin”, Billy replied but set off to follow his naughty friend through the long grass beside the pathway.

Sure enough there was the big silly dog wagging its long furry tail excitedly as a little boy threw a stick for the silly dog to fetch. On the grass was a family of people having a nice picnic sat right in the very spot where Colin and his friends met up to play every day?

“Oh yes I see” Colin said to Billy as he bobbed his head up to have a look at the people and the very big very silly dog in the park, Billy kept very sensibly low down and well out of sight. “Come on lets go now Colin” Billy whispered. “Just a few more moments” Colin replied enjoying watching the silly dog chase after the stick then he saw a familiar friend approaching them. It was Flitty the Butterfly fluttering from flower to flower and getting closer and closer to them all the time, then both Colin and Billy gasped in horror as the little boy threw the dogs stick away and then picked up a longer thin pole with a big net on the end then headed off in Flitty’s direction, he was going to catch poor Flitty with the net! And even worse the dogs stick fell onto the grass right next to Colin and Billy and the big silly dog was running towards them with its huge mouth wide open and its long sloppy tongue flopping over its very sharp looking teeth. “Oh dear” Colin shouted, “Oh no” Billy cried as the little boy ran towards Flitty who had not seen him, and the big dog was nearly on top of them. The big slavering dog came to a shuddering stop and grabbed the stick tightly with its sharp teeth then horror of horrors it saw Colin and Billy so dropped the stick so it could gobble them up. Billy squeaked, Colin squealed then quick as a flash shouted to Billy to jump up and grab the silly dog’s big wafting tail. They both jumped up just in time and grabbed the dog’s tail as it swished and swayed sending the two little insects flying across the park. “Wheeee” shouted Colin, “Oh Noooo” cried Billy as they whizzed through the air right past Flitty startling her as they whooshed past. Flitty looked up and said with some surprise “Oh hello Colin! Oh and Billy! What on Earth are you two up to I didn’t know you could fly” she exclaimed. “Look out Flitty!” they shouted, causing Flitty to quickly turn around see the little boy just as he was about to trap her in his net. Flitty fluttered up and away just in the nick of time and Colin and Billy landed safely in the long damp grass at the far side of the park rolling over and over as they laughed and laughed. What an exciting adventure and what a long way home they had to go now. Silly little insects.

A long way home.
