It was the start of another busy summer’s day on the beach for Dennis the seaside Donkey and his friends. Lots of people were already down on the promenade and the beach enjoying the beautiful sunshine. As the Donkeys all trotted down onto the sand they could see Mummy's and Daddy's waiting with their children near to their loading point. Excited children squealed and cheered as the Donkeys arrived.
All the Donkeys were eager to start work taking the children for rides on the beach, everyone that is except for poor old Pearl the fussiest of the Donkeys. She had hurt her foot messing about the previous night in the field with Cory the cheeky twin Donkey. They were kicking a piece of wood around like the children do on the beach, only Pearl had kicked a rock by mistake. “Ouch!” she had cried.
The next morning Pearls foot still hurt. The Donkeys all knew that if they said anything to their leaders Pearl would be left in the field all day to recover.
Pearl hated being left alone, so did all the others? Spending all day wondering around the field alone was not a very nice way to spend a day at all. They missed all the fun and the excited children and all the stories the Donkeys told. She told the others not to say anything and said that her foot was much better even though it really did hurt; she thought she could manage quite all right for today.
They trotted from their field to the beach. Pearls foot did hurt a bit, but not too bad. She was pleased she had come, she remembered when Biddy the oldest of the Donkeys had eaten some nasty dandelions, and it had upset her tummy. She had been left in the field all day and every one had talked about her whilst she wasn't there!
She certainly didn't want that to happen. Pearls handler who looked after her on the beach noticed she was limping slightly, she looked at her foot inspecting it very closely with concern, and then considering that it was not hurt too bad she decided not tell the owner.
After a few trips up and down the beach the other Donkeys could not help but notice Pearls discomfort.
“Are you alright?” Dennis asked “Yes perfectly fine, thank you” Pearl replied quickly.
“Are you alright?” Posh asked “Yes fine, thank you” Pearl replied impatiently.
“Are you alright?” Rory asked “Yes thank you!” Pearl replied sharply.
“Are you alright?” Suzy asked “Yes!” replied Pearl rather crossly now.
“Are you…” Roger started to ask “yes, yes, yes! I'm perfectly fine!” snapped Pearl.
Biddy and Cory decided not to ask Pearl if she was feeling alright. She obviously was not. The other Donkeys shuffled around when loading to make sure Pearl was only carrying the smallest children to help keep the weight off her poorly foot.
Still they all knew it was bothering Pearl more than she would admit. If she complained she knew she would be taken back to the field on her own before the day had ended.
The Donkeys stopped for their lunch break. Dennis noticed that Pearl was standing on three feet and holding her poorly foot off the ground and he knew that she was in some pain. Dennis came up with a plan, he whispered his clever idea to the others and they all readily agreed.
After lunch it was much quieter, not so many people queuing for rides, they were giving four rides at a time now, with the other four Donkeys waiting for them to come back down the beach then taking their turn to give another four lucky children a Donkey ride. First Dennis, Suzy, Posh and Roger would go, and then it was the turn of Pearl, Cory, Rory and Biddy.
