Dicky Mint the cheeky house Sparrow was up very early as usual this morning whistling and tweeting away as he had his morning wash and then his breakfast. Today was a special day.

The previous day his friends had been planning a secret surprise and Dicky Mint had no idea what it was, perhaps a party or new game to play maybe they were expecting a special visitor or having a picnic lunch in the big meadow. Somehow everyone else seemed to know what was happening except poor old Dicky Mint.

He double checked with his Mummy that it was not his birthday, or any of his friend’s birthdays, and he also made sure he had not forgotten any special events or days.

“No I’m sorry Minty I have no idea what your friends are up to” his Mummy said, so he quickly finished his breakfast and flew off from their home in the roof of a house on the edge of town to find his friends and discover what surprise they had been planning.

First he called on his best friend Dicky Flo, the most sensible of the sparrows, hoping that she would have some news for him, but Dicky Flo’s Mummy told Minty that she had been up very early and left home some time ago.

Then Minty called at Dicky Ronnie’s house, but he too had been up very early and gone, how strange for them to be up and out so early he thought. He flew across to the twin’s house Dicky Tippy and Dicky Dippy surely they must still be at home finishing their breakfast, Tippy was the silliest of the Sparrows and her brother Dippy was hopeless at everything.

To Minty’s amazement their Mummy told him that both of them had been up very early and had already washed and made their beds and had their breakfast then gone out. Now that was a surprise, Dicky Tippy and Dippy were never up this early.

Now Minty was quite sure that something very strange was going on and without pausing to rest on a roof or a tree or a fence he rushed around the rest of his friend’s homes to try and find out just what was going on!

Next he went to Dicky Beas house, she was the cleverest of the Sparrows, and she was sure to know what was happening, but of course she too had already gone out and so had Dicky Peanut ‘the daring Sparrow’ and even Dicky Elly the naughtiest of them all.

Minty had called on all of his friends now and all of them had already gone out, ‘how very strange he thought’ , but where could they all be and what on earth could they be doing and why was he the only one who didn’t know what was going on it was all very mysterious and confusing.

Minty decided to ask some of the other animals if they had seen his Sparrow friends. First he asked Thomas the sneaky Tom Cat taking great care to keep well out of his reach.

“No, if I had seen them they would be inside my tummy by now!” Thomas said sniggering. Next he asked Horace the big guard dog “go away Dicky Mint I am on duty and far too busy to talk to you” he barked impatiently.

It was hopeless poor Minty simply could not find any of his friends, he decided to fly as high as he could and see if he could spot any of them from the air. He flew over the old tree where he had hidden from Flo last week, and then he saw the water bath where he had splashed Dicky Bea and Dicky Tippy on Sunday.

Next he flew over the messy Piggy’s home where he had tricked Peanut and Dippy into landing in the smelly mud it was so funny he couldn’t help giggling again at the thought of it.

As he flew around looking for his friends he giggled remembering all the tricks he had played on them that week, but where on earth could they all possibly be now.

Minty flew and flew until his little wings were tired out and he eventually had to land back on his own house roof quite exhausted and hungry and thirsty having missed his morning snack and his lunch.

He sat perched on the edge of his roof feeling very miserable and very sad and very lonely indeed. Then he heard voices giggling and sniggering behind him then they started to laugh quite loudly.

Dicky Mint turned around to see all his friends perched on top of his own roof! All flapping and whistling and tweeting and rolling around as they appeared from their hiding place on the other side of Minty’s rooftop, they were all laughing very loudly now.

The surprise they had planned had been to trick Minty as payback for all the pranks he had played on his friends last week. All the other Sparrows had spent the morning hiding from poor old Dicky Mint as he raced around trying to find them.

“That will teach Dicky Mint the cheeky sparrow a lesson”!

They all laughed, even Minty found their trick funny in the end and had to laugh as well. Soon they were all flying off to play lots of fun games in the big meadow all chirping and whistling and flipping and flapping around everywhere. Tweet, Tweet, Tweet.

Spring geese.

All the Dicky birds and animals knew that it was the time of year when a huge flock of very big, very rude wild Geese visited. Every year at spring time they stopped off for a few weeks just outside the town where Dicky Mint and his friends lived to rest and feed before continuing on to their home near the big lakes in the North.

They were very welcome to stay for their annual visit and Minty and his friends had always attempted to make them welcome.

Dicky Flo the most sensible of the Sparrows and silly Dicky Tippy had flown down to the meadow to try to chat to the Geese and they were very rude to them telling Flo and Tippy to go away and stop bothering them.

Dickey Dippy and Dicky Peanut ‘the most daring Sparrow’ had taken a nice big seed cake to the meadow and intended to offer it to the Geese as a gift, but before they could speak the Geese just took it from them without even asking and ate it all up seconds. “Well how rude!” They said.

Then Dicky Ronny and Dicky Elly ‘the naughty sparrow’ had been to visit the Geese. They had struggled to take a big heavy bag full of nuts to them as a welcome gift hoping to make
