Chapter 1

EARLY LIFE AND FAMILY BACKGROUND

Grace Patricia Kelly was born on November 12, 1929, at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She came into the world as a member of an affluent and influential family that had left a significant mark on the East Coast of the United States. Her father, John B. Kelly Sr., was a prominent figure who had garnered fame for his exceptional achievements in sculling, winning three Olympic gold medals. In addition to his sporting success, he owned a highly successful brickwork contracting company, which was well-known throughout the region.

John B. Kelly Sr. was also involved in politics, having been the Democratic nominee in the 1935 election for Mayor of Philadelphia, where he narrowly lost by the closest margin in the city's history. His dedication to public service extended during World War II, when he was appointed by President Roosevelt as the National Director of Physical Fitness. Grace's uncle, Walter C. Kelly, was a celebrated vaudeville star who transitioned into making films for prestigious studios like Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Paramount Pictures. Another uncle, George Kelly, was a distinguished Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist, screenwriter, and director.

Her Mother's Legacy

Grace's mother, Margaret Majer, hailed from a German ancestry background. She had a notable legacy of her own, having been a pioneer in women's athletics. Margaret had taught physical education at the University of Pennsylvania and was the first woman to coach women's athletics at the university. In her youth, Margaret also pursued a career in modeling. After marrying John B. Kelly in 1924, she dedicated herself to being a homemaker until her children reached school age, at which point she became actively involved in various civic organizations.

Margaret's patrilineal lineage traced back to Prof. Johann Christian von Majer, a distinguished political scientist, jurist, and theologian who served as the Rector of the University of Tübingen multiple times. Through this lineage, Grace was connected to noble German families, including the Stauffenberg family, von Plieningen, von Münchingen, von Ow, von Bettendorf, von Nippenburg, and von Roth.

Siblings and Catholic Faith

Grace Kelly had two older siblings, Margaret and John Jr., and a younger sister, Elizabeth. The family was deeply rooted in the Catholic faith, and the children were raised with strong religious values.

Early Education and Aspirations

Grace's early years were spent in a close-knit Catholic community. She was baptized at Saint Bridget's parish in East Falls, a relatively young parish founded in 1853 by Saint John Neumann, the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia. Her family was well acquainted with the other families in the parish. During her time at Ravenhill Academy, a Catholic girls' school, Grace and her mother and sisters frequently modeled fashions at local charity events.
