Hope is the one thing that can help us get through the darkest times. Unknown Author.

Despite his younger brother doing everything in his power to find a solution to the problem plaguing the hills and his brother, Kiyoshi starts losing hope on getting back to normal and burys himself deep in depression till Daisuke returns to their hideout with a gold ring in his mouth.

However, it seems like the ring has some connection to them and a certain event in their past. A monster attacking their village and their mother waging the rings against it, however not much connecting the path to anything till they see the ring's effects on it.

Deep in the forest away from the villages, a group of samurai travel into the hills to look for two missing children. However, what they came across in the hills is even worse then they imagined.

Hope?

Deep within their cave hideout that rested a fair bit from the now dead hills but was still miles from the mountains where the wise old dragons laid, the rotted white fox or rather, Kiyoshi as he was called back in his village, was resting his head on top of a little nest made of straw. The side of his head that revealed part of his skull was buried deep within the straw so no one would see it, however there was no hiding the major damage the path had done to the left side of his body or the manic grin that had managed to keep itself stretched forcibly on his face, making him look less a young, friendly fox and more like an insane maniac that would anyone who saw him running away in fear.

Well, if there was anyone left on the hills who could see him, that is, they were all dead. Every single animal was dead, gone, except for his younger brother, Daisuke. He was the only one left alive, untouched by the wretched path, the one he discovered by pure accident and for some ungodly reason or another decided to go down and for what? For something amazing and never before seen by his curious eye? Oh yeah, it was certainly never before seen but it wasn’t as amazing as he had hoped it would be, not at all.

Hmmm, maybe it was, at least, to the more twisted part of his fractured mind. Kiyoshi shook his head, moving the straw that rested underneath his fleshless head as he tried to rid his mind of his thoughts, no child such as himself should have thoughts like that. If they did, they shouldn’t be called children at all, what they should be called wasn’t something Kiyoshi wanted to think about. The white fox sighed to himself, lifting his remaining arm that had been stripped of flesh so he could cover his face, his ears flattened hard against the nest to the point they should’ve hurt badly or something like that.

They would’ve if Kiyoshi still had pain nerves connected in his ears, there was nothing. The fox clenched his jaw that was locked in a manic grin, his fingers curled inwards, sharpened claws digging into the few patches of fur and flesh that hadn’t completely rotted. His claws didn’t cut through the skin like he expected though he wished they would, he’d rather feel something else other than this soul-crushing guilt he was feeling right now and if he felt pain then it meant that some of him was still alive, quite ironic considering he was a walking corpse.

Kiyoshi’s ears twitched suddenly as if he caught sounds from somewhere in the woods. Confused, the white fox shifted himself so he was lying flat on his stomach, his head tilting in the direction of the entrance of the cave where the noises seemed to be coming from. His ears raised upwards, swiveling as they searched around for the source. Despite having some of his nerves killed off from that infected path, all his senses managed to remain intact and in perfect working condition.

However, it still took Kiyoshi a few seconds to recognize the sounds for what they were. But when he did, he swore he felt the manic grin shift slightly on his face to become something that was more close to a genuine smile he use to wear whenever he would pass by the once residents while they were hanging around the hills or playing with his little brother, who was the only other living soul on the hills, back in the village. Speaking of his little brother, Daisuke ran down the path leading to the hill caves or rather the cave hideout they took hiding in.

His little paws ate up the ground as quickly as they were able to, his eyes knotted in a determined manner that he rarely wore as half the time he was nothing more than a nervous wreck. The dust from the path poofed up in different directions from every step the black fox took, some of the dust ended up in the fox’s face, causing his eyes to water and nearly caused him to cough harshly, but he managed to hold it back as he didn’t want to drop what he was carrying, it was important to not just him and his older brother but possibly the whole hills.
