Arthritis is a joint disorder that comes in many different forms. It is responsible for causing inflammation in one or more joints throughout your body. It is considered to be a disease and it has over 100 different types.
Arthritis can include inflammation of the joints, the surrounding tendons, cartilage, and the ligaments. It is also responsible for destruction of the surrounding bones as well. Arthritis can affect almost every part of the body including but not limited to the feet, back, knees, shoulders, elbows, fingers and more. Some forms of arthritis can even affect organs like the heart and lungs.
There are approximately over 40 million people in the United States alone who endure some form of arthritis. This disease is not discriminatory and can affect anyone even children. It is said that over 200,000 children suffer from arthritis also.
The word ‘arthritis’ means joint inflammation. Inflammation is a natural reaction the body has when it is trying to fight off disease or injury. The body will respond by swelling and be very stiff. Arthritis can also be responsible for causing the body a lot of pain and for some it is very hard to endure. It can cause a loss of quality of life. People often lose productivity in their days when they suffer from arthritis.
There are things people can do about arthritis and there are treatment methods to help with the pain. However, there is not a cure for the disease today.
Arthritis is classified as a joint disorder and a rheumatic disease. Because there are so many different types of arthritis, there are different conditions and features of the disease also. Most of the features of the disease are very similar in the way it affects the body whether it be joints and ligaments or internal organs in the body.
Arthritis can affect a body in a very mild form like tendonitis in the elbow or arms. It can also be crippling to a body. Some forms of arthritis can involve every part of the body. The arthritis that people recognize and connect with is known as the ‘wear and tear’ arthritis. This is the most common form of arthritis known as osteoarthritis.
The myth about arthritis is that is affects only old people. This is not true. Arthritis is also responsible for affecting children and people of all ages. Because there are so many different types of arthritis anyone can be affected.
There is not just one cause of arthritis. Nobody is the same. The causes of arthritis may be different for many people. However there are certain factors that can lead to certain types of arthritis. It is important to be familiar with the different factors to know if you are at risk of developing the disease.
Genetics is definitely a factor of arthritis. If arthritis runs in your family then you may be susceptible to the disease at some point in your life. It is not entirely understood how well genetics play a role in the body when it comes to arthritis. However, the genetic differences have shown to be a contributing factor to run in the family.
As most people already know, arthritis also comes with age. This is because as the body ages the bones, cartilage, ligaments, and the rest of the body becomes more fragile. The body is less capable of self-repairing as it ages also. Elderly have a much larger chance of developing arthritis as they get older. There is no way to get out of it.
Another factor that can contribute to someone getting arthritis is weight. A body has to carry around the load of your weight. The knees, hips, ankles, and even your back can have a strain put on them if you are overweight. Obesity can contribute to arthritis because a heavy load on any part of the body can put too much strain. This is why you see obese people who have bad knees, ankles and other parts of their body. The body is not meant to carry around the excess weight.
If you have been injured in the past then you could be susceptible to acquiring arthritis also. Previous injury is a factor and anyone can get arthritis when they have suffered from an injury to any of their joints, bones or ligaments. One of the common places people get arthritis due to an injury often occurs in the knees. When people play heavy sports and injure their knee breaking the area of the bone where the bone penetrates the cartilage of the knee joint. This can be very painful.
Occupational hazards can be a contributing factor to developing forms of arthritis also. There are some jobs that have a higher chance of employees developing arthritis than others. These jobs can be construction workers who have a high requirement of usage of their body and even assembly line workers. If you work a job that is taxing on your body then you might consider thinking about another line of work. Especially, if you don’t want to be susceptible to the crippling effects that arthritis can have on your body. In the long run, it is a smarter decision to find another job than it is to continue working and know eventually you will have arthritis.
If you are an athlete then there are factors that could make you at risk to developing arthritis now or later on in your life. It is not evident exactly how much sports are a factor but there are many athletes who have developed arthritis throughout their body later in life. Sport participation obviously can lead to injury in your joints and your ligaments which may very well be the contributing factors are the prior injuries to the body.
Illness and infection can also be a contributing factor of arthritis. If you experience some type of infection in your joints then you could be susceptible to contracting arthritis in the same area. People who have had multiple episodes of gout often get arthritis. There are many different medical states that can cause the disease.
