For AG, I wanted to say everything that I never got to tell you.
It was a promise so full of meaning
At least it was to me
But looking back, did you ever take us seriously?
Or was I only a convenient backup?
––––––––
I had not accepted myself yet
I liked girls but was trying to force myself to like boys
We were both Ace
And you were starting to be curious about girls
––––––––
So we made a pact
We would be there for each other
We would talk to each other about everything
Avoid getting trapped with toxic guys
––––––––
And if we hadn’t found someone we truly wanted to be with
By the time a set number of years had passed
We would marry each other
A platonic relationship of enjoying things together
I hadn’t spoken to her in months
We were just two old friends catching up
Venting about exes
Discussing future creative plans
––––––––
It happened by accident
As if a happy chance of fate
It felt so natural
A chance to be happy
––––––––
We both had trouble finding ‘The One’
What if that concept didn’t actually exist?
So we decided to be there for each other
We had so much that we both loved.
Soon we were talking almost every single night.
We gave each other recommendations for books and movies
For tv shows and places to see
––––––––
I would tell you my secrets and I thought you were telling me yours
Now I wonder if you stayed hidden
Even though you were becoming my everything
Yet I made myself vulnerable to you
––––––––
It was the start of falling in love with you
We called it fake dating
But the relationship we developed over that year was real
At least it was to me
The thing we bonded over the most was our love of books
Especially sapphic books
We were discovering them together
Finding ourselves in them
––––––––
We talked for countless hours about what we read
I read much faster so I was the one to suggest the most books for you to also read
But when we buddy read
I slowed down on that book so that you could keep up
I loved you enough to want to make sure I didn’t accidentally spoil the story for you
––––––––
Those books helped me realize that I loved women exclusively
And our time together made me realize that I loved you
I hoped that the books would set us free
