With the rise and rise of tablets, mobiles and smart TVs, web browsing has become a universal activity that’s no longer tied to a traditional desktop.
It’s therefore vital that web pages display suitably across all platforms. Responsive design is the practice of building websites that display beautifully regardless of the size of the browser window.
In this report, we’ll run through the main principals and practices of responsive design. We’ll also show you a few tools available to help create responsive websites in practice.
Finally, we’ll also cover the new trend of minimalism that has grown alongside responsive design, and the emergence of a new set of blogging tools set to challenge the crown of WordPress.
In the early days of web design, sites tended to be of a fixed size. That is to say, the layout was fixed to a certain width, and images were of a set resolution, etc. At this time, there were no mobile phones with web browsers, there were no tablets and the majority of PCs had a choice of only a few resolution settings.
A mobile phones developed internet capabilities, people recognised that looking at a normal website on a tiny screen was not all that user friendly. This led to many companies creating an alternative version of their site, specifically designed for the smaller resolutions of mobile phone screens. There was even a brand new top level domain .MOBI unveiled, specifically intended for hosting mobile-friendly sites.
However, mobile technology continued to diversify. Phones got smaller, but they also got bigger. Tablets arrived, then mini-tablets, then phablets and soon we’ll have super-sized tablets, and so on. Pixel density and retina displays also arrived to add an extra dimension.
It became clear that web designs needed to be able to adapt to ANY given screen size and resolution.
The Old Way
Previously, a design would have a default size, and if there needed to be exceptions, these would be specifically added in.
For example: by default my website will be 1000 pixels wide. Except if we detect you are using a mobile phone, in which case we will switch to a 300 pixel wide version.
