Summary of American Carnage by Fred Guttenberg and Thomas Gabor : Shattering the Myths That Fuel Gun Violence (School Safety, Violence in Society)
IN THIS SUMMARIZED BOOK, YOU WILL GET:
Fred Guttenberg and Thomas Gabor, the author of American Carnage, aim to dismantle common myths about gun violence and gun ownership. The US has a dismal gun violence record, with over 40,000 deaths annually. The gun lobby and gun-extremists have been spreading misinformation for years, raising doubt about the dangers of pervasive gun ownership and the effectiveness of gun laws. Countering these myths is crucial for a safer society, where children can attend school and people can work without fear of being shot. The book exposes false myths such as gun owners using firearms to fend off attackers, an armed society is safer, and guns don't kill people.

Fred Guttenberg and his wife, a survivor of gun violence, are part of a club that hundreds of Americans join every day. The club is dedicated to the millions of survivors who have lost loved ones to the horrors of gun violence. The couple, who lost their father to gun violence in 1984, felt outraged by the government's inaction and the lack of action taken to address the issue. In 2016, they joined the club and became part of the movement.
Fred's book, Find the Helpers, shares his identity as a dad, fueling his activism and ability to educate the world and change our laws. The book also lays out dangerous and distorted lies manufactured by the gun industry, aiming to break down these lies with truth, facts, and data.
The book encourages readers to educate themselves about the importance of gun regulation and question efforts that rewrite our history of strong regulation by those seeking to make a profit at any cost. By learning about the issues, conversations can be more productive and meaningful.
To help the club, Fred and his wife encourage readers to educate themselves about the regulation of firearms, question efforts that rewrite our history of strong regulation by those seeking to make a profit at any cost, and consider how to talk about the change needed to save lives in a thoughtful, direct, and impactful manner that connects with anyone, whether they own guns or not. This book aims to empower individuals to advocate for themselves, their families, and their communities by addressing gun laws that save lives. With 90% of Americans supporting universal background checks and 71% of NRA members believing in them, the majority of Americans believe that no citizen should own assault rifles or have access to high-capacity magazines. The problem lies not in sensibility but politics. In 2008, Barack Obama ran for president on a platform that did not support gay marriage, but public opinion changed, leading to gay marriage becoming legal in 2015.
Gun violence is a more heated issue, but the politics are similar. As public sentiment changes, gun laws can reflect this. In 2022, ten Republican senators signed a bill expanding background checks for people under 21 and encouraging states to enact "red flag" laws on potential gun buyers. The tide is shifting, and more is needed, but the tide is shifting. The book provides essential tools for individuals to become well-informed members of a club that will make a difference with the facts and knowledge gained.
