Prologue

In a chemistry classroom, a student is informed that he is a Gen Z sex symbol. The student is surprised to find a video of him on Time magazine, claiming to be the No. 1 chess player in the world. The host, Jim, James, and Jimmy, are intrigued by the young man's appearance and the chess renaissance he has created. Sawyer, a Grandmaster and winner of his second World Championship, is the subject of the conversation. Sawyer's grandfather taught him chess from a young age, and the student admits that winning a chess match was his favorite thing.

The host asks Sawyer when he realized he was good enough to be a pro chess player and if he knew he was good enough from the start. Sawyer responds that he didn't know. The student tears out a chess pod and finishes the instruction video. The rest of the class is almost done with the experiment, and the student stops thinking about Sawyer and his voice. They play for the first time together, and the student wipes the floor with him. The conversation continues, and the student realizes that he is not the only one who has been influenced by the chess renaissance.

PART ONE

OPENINGS

Two years later

Mal Peña, a smart and stubborn girl, is tasked with a team tournament for chess. She is short a player and doesn't play anymore, but she insists on joining. The two have a long history of playing chess together, with Easton being the perfectionist and Mallory Greenleaf being the messy sidekick.

Easton asks Mal to join the tournament, which is for charity. She mentions that it's not for a right-wing think tank or a made-up disease, but for a charity event. Mal is hesitant, but Easton assures her that she has a spine and can handle the situation. She recalls past experiences with Easton, such as being VP in class, hacking Missy Collins' Twitter, and starring in a musical.

Mal and Easton share a secret smile, and they discuss their pasts and the challenges they face in their lives. Easton is a stubborn person who never cared for chess like Mal, but she still stuck with it much longer. They make an odd love triangle, with Easton mentioning that she has a spine and that she remembers past events and relationships.

In the end, the three friends find themselves in a difficult situation, with Easton pointing out that they are unable to say no to the tournament.

Mallory, a busy woman, is excited to spend time with her sister Easton before college. She mentions that she has to be in Colorado by mid-August for orientation, which is terrifying for her. Easton, who graduated three months ago, had three scholarship offers but decided not to go. She is worried about the guilt she feels and wonders if she can find a hobby to enjoy.

Mallory is surprised when Easton tells her about a tournament she has already attended, which is in affiliation with Doctors Without Borders. She is hesitant to participate, but Easton sends her a link to the WebMD page on gluten sensitivity. Mallory is unsure if she will participate in the tournament or not, but she imagines her going to college for months and being alone with her date.

Fear stabs into her chest as she thinks about her coming home for Thanksgiving and the changes she might make. She asks Easton to pay her back by driving her sisters to camp next week so she can pick up more shifts. Easton is upset and insists that Mallory get to work.

Mallory tries to convince Easton to get to work, but she is unable to do so. She tries to make it through the day, but ultimately ends up in Paterson, stagnating and fearing that her sister will change.

Mallory, a young woman, is in a New Jersey prison cell, preparing her sisters' oatmeals. She is upset that Sabrina has bitten her arm and called her a dick-breath, but she insists that she is not. She is also worried about Darcy being a total poopstain and plans to take them to the farmers market to trade them for cotton candy grapes.

Last year, the sisters became rivals, with Sabrina acting as though she was too cool to be genetically related to them. Darcy stayed the same, always reading and precocious. The only time they get along is when they are ganging up against Mallory. Mallory's mom accuses her of being a dick-breath and threatens to write dickbreath and douchewad on their foreheads.

Sabrina, who is unsure of the legal fees, suggests that she might consider seeking Child Protective Services on Mallory. Mallory is hesitant, threatening to flush them both down the toilet if she wakes up. She is relieved to be awake and has hugs from her favorite Russian dolls.

Mallory's mother jokes that the sisters and her sister are slightly smaller versions of each other, but she doesn't mind that they take so much after Dad. The story highlights the challenges faced by the characters and the importance of rule through fear and never negotiate with hormonal, anarchic, bloodthirsty sharks.

The protagonist, Darcy, and Sabrina are discussing their lives and their relationship with Easton. Darcy is skeptical about the protagonist's financial situation, but the protagonist assures her that she enjoys toying with them and will pick up extra shifts at the garage to afford them. Easton offers to drive the protagonists to camp next week, and the protagonist is welcome.

The protagonist's mother, who is a kind and patient person, is upset about the protagonist's lack of respect for her life choices. She believes that they should not feel guilty about their decisions, as none of this is their fault. The protagonist decides to imply that she wants to go to college so little that every time she brings up the topic, she feels hurt.

The protagonist's mother is surprised by the protagonist's decision to take a day off and that Sabrina looks at them when she needs money. The protagonist's mother has a master's degree in biology and is a medical writer, but she is a freelancer. The protagonist's mother has chronic pain, which makes it difficult for her to work regularly and take over projects.

The protagonist's mother has a master's degree in biology and is a medical writer, but she is now unable to work regularly due to her chronic pain. The protagonist decides to go back to bed and listen to Sabrina and Darcy talk about their oatmeals. As they leave, the protagonist notices Easton's car approaching and decides to head to the street, marking the beginning of the rest of their life.

2

The protagonist, Mallory, is a member of a team at the Paterson Chess Club, where she is the team leader and the team dictator. They are playing four matches for charity and the tournament is open to amateurs. Instead of using FIDE ratings, players are matched according to self-reported ability. Mallory knows about the World Chess Federation's complicated system to determine players' skill levels and rank them accordingly. She hasn't played in ages and is not interested in going out with anyone, even though her FIDE rating is 2,546.

Easton, the team leader, declares their skill levels and puts Mallory in the highest bracket. She also puts Zach in the lowest bracket, which Josh believes is the lowest for him. The protagonist asks Easton if the PCC has her browser history, but she denies it. The manager of the club asked her to put together a team, and she was obligated to do so.

As they walk through the doors, the protagonist feels frozen and unable to step out of the way. They enter a room filled with chessboards, some old and cheap, and the smell of a childhood memory. Mallory needs a drink and drinks Crystal Light and Strawberry. Zach mentions spotted international chess personalities, but she doesn't believe them.

The protagonist is left feeling a bit fawn-kneed as she stands in the room, surrounded by chess pieces that are not good quality.
