INTRODUCTION

Elizabeth Zott is the well-known star of the hit television show Supper at Six. But this isn't the narrative of Elizabeth becoming a TV personality after a mediocre academic career as a would-be research scientist. It's the tale of how Elizabeth got into TV after failing to follow her genuine interest in science, and how she ultimately rekindled her dormant professional goals.

This summary of Bonnie Garmus' Lessons in Chemistry may make you angry at the patriarchal structures that stifled Elizabeth's career and that of many other women in the 1950s and 1960s. It will, however, leave you encouraged by Elizabeth's no-nonsense, distinctive approach to coping with restrictive gender norms and by her final triumph over the forces of patriarchy and sexism that have long stifled her.

CHAPTER 1

A TALE OF TWO CHEMISTRY CAREERS

When we first meet Elizabeth Zott, the main character in Lessons in Chemistry, she is known to her millions of fans as "Luscious Lizzy," a no-nonsense yet winningly charming TV chef who is transforming the way 1950s-era America cooks and eats. Even President Lyndon B. Johnson keeps a close eye on Lizzy.

But before she became a television sensation, Lizzy was a chemist—a low-paid, undervalued chemist. It wasn't because she was bad at chemistry. Quite the reverse! It was because she was a woman.

In the 1950s, the United States wasn't really kind to aspiring women like Elizabeth Zott. Her California workplace, the Hastings Research Institute, is no exception. It offers her an ordinary career working on minor lab projects for far less money than her male coworkers; the unspoken belief that Elizabeth will perform administrative tasks like a glorified secretary and make coffee rather than a serious scientist; and Miss Frask, an actual secretary, who is constantly admonishing Elizabeth when she acts "unladylike" and who has clearly never heard of words like sisterhood or feminism.

Calvin Evans, the institute's celebrity, is one thing to like about Hastings. To begin with, Elizabeth dislikes the clever scientist; after a disagreement over beaker allocation, Calvin mistakes Elizabeth for a secretary. But he soon sees her as the brilliant, ambitious woman she is.
