Coming to Netflix in May: Hi! I’m Your Birthday Twin!
In June 2019, Alix Summer, known for her All-Woman series, created a one-off project called Hi! I'm Your Birthday Twin!, about a local woman born on the same day as her. As the project progressed, Summer learned more about her unassuming neighbor than she could have imagined, leading to her life being destroyed and two people dead. The film is spine-chilling and offers shocking glimpses into the darkest corners of humanity.
The opening credits start rolling, and the audio fades as the shot goes back to darkness. The film is a unique and spine-chilling experience that will leave viewers wanting more.
Josie, a 40-year-old woman, is celebrating her birthday at a gastropub in Queen's Park. She has been there before, but this time, she has chosen the Lansdowne on Salusbury Road. The restaurant is a place where she can enjoy her birthday and the memories of her grandmother's last month's will. Josie and her husband Walter are seated at a table, and they are greeted by a woman named Alix Summer, who has a winter blonde hair and a wide-legged top. The group follows, and they all sit noisily, shouting about who should sit where and not wanting to sit next to their husbands.
Alix Summer, a woman with a big smile and a tall man with red hair, directs the group to a table across from Josie's. They all bring their glasses together, and they all say, "Happy birthday!" Josie, who is now in her early forties, is surprised by the age difference between her and her husband. She orders feta and sundried tomato flatbread, followed by tuna tagliata with mashed cannellini beans and a bottle of Veuve Clicquot.
Alix Summer and her group of friends, including her husband Walter, fill the space with their voices, arms, hands, and words, creating an effervescent energy that fills the space. The energy they give off is a swirling, intoxicating aurora borealis of grating, glorious entitlement.
In this text, the characters are discussing their birthdays and the Huge Coincidence. Alix Summer, a birthday girl, is mentioned as being born at St Mary's Hospital. Josie, a friend of Alix's, is surprised to learn that she and her sister Zoe were born on the same day. The conversation revolves around their shared birthplace, St Mary's, and the coincidence of their births.
Alix is surprised to learn that her birthday twin, Zoe, was born at the same hospital. Zoe is surprised to learn that Alix is her big sister, Zoe, and that she was born on the same day. The conversation ends with Josie returning to her husband and flatbread, while Alix beams her birthday greeting.
As the night progresses, Alix's head spins due to the tequila slammers at midnight. Nathan, a Scotch-drinking babysitter, pours a Scotch and the house is quiet. The cat paws its way towards Alix, purring before Alix finds her fur. She calls out to Nathan, who tells her it's her forty-fifth birthday. Nathan dismisses her as a "Birthday Twin," but she feels a sense of righteousness.
Alix admires Nathan's beauty but also wishes he could see the beauty in less conventionally attractive women. She feels like she doesn't really like him, as he denigrates women's appearances. The cat is curled in her lap, and she runs to the toilet, where she is violently sick. The story highlights the importance of understanding and accepting one's own beauty and the significance of birthdays.
Josie wakes up from a dream in the Lansdowne pub, where she meets Alix Summer, a well-known podcaster and journalist. They live on a busy, dirty road near Kilburn and Paddington, where the large Victorian villas were built in 1876 for wealthy merchants. The road now consists of clunkily converted apartments and buses, with the hiss of hydraulics pulling up at the bus stop. Josie wakes up at 8.12 a.m. and wakes up to the sounds of buses.
She goes to Walter, who sits at the dining table, and asks her if she fed her dog, Fred, and if she took him out. Josie takes full responsibility for him and is grateful for Walter's help.
Alix Summer, a well-known podcaster and journalist, shares a podcast with Josie, where she interviews successful women about their careers. She listens to Mari le Jeune, a global beauty empire owner, and learns about her marriage to a man who controlled her life. She discovers that there were a cast of people waiting for her to come back to them, who had been there all along.
Alix asks Josie if her husband's sudden death allowed her to follow her path, and she answers that it was possible. She had spent years dreaming about her life without him, and it was possible that she could have followed this path without losing him to cancer. Death is a clean break, with no grey areas or ambiguity, and it helped her navigate the endless possibilities that opened up to her during those first few years.
Josie listens to a podcast about Mari, a woman who owns three properties worldwide, employs her children in her family business, and is the founder of the largest anti-domestic-violence charity in the UK. She pauses to reflect on her extraordinary life and explores Alix's Instagram feed, where she sees a large kitchen with an island, red-headed children on windswept beaches, and views from London skyscrapers. Josie is a consummate lurker, never posting on her social media accounts, but she is happy for others to see her.
As Sunday dawns, Josie wakes up to find Nathan not beside her in their bed. She tries to reconstruct the night before, but the pillow on Nathan's side of the bed has not been touched. She hears her children's noises, and she wonders where her husband is. She calls her father, but he is not in the shed or studio.
Alix walks into the garden, where she hears her children's noises. She asks her mother if she saw him earlier, and she wonders if her husband has disappeared silently in the night. She believes that only her husband has disappeared, as it is not what other husbands do.
In this text, the protagonist, Alix Summer, is a forty-five-year-old woman who has been drinking for nearly twelve hours and going AWOL in Soho. She listens to nearly thirty episodes of Alix's podcast, which tells stories of women who have overcome various challenges, such as illness, bad men, poverty, war, mental health issues, and tragedy. The podcast series has won awards, and Josie is inspired by the stories of these women.
