The old window provided a grand view of Yellow Tree, a ginkgo that only blooms for a week each year. Annie and Edward held their baby to the window, but she couldn't say "yellow." As the rent became unpayable, they moved to a more affordable living situation. They found a dimly lit lopsided square with no views of Yellow Tree and a central shaft called Pigeon Tunnel. They named their baby Rose and hoped to have a bit of outdoor space someday. They were cramped but felt familiar and warm, and Annie felt that their lack of space signaled her lack of promise.
They were lucky in many ways, being healthy, happy, and fine. They spent every penny saved on moving in and out, even the coins from under the sink.
Annie and Edward are moving to a new apartment near Edward's work, which offers day care. They are excited to have a new home, but Stephanie is hesitant to join them. Annie is concerned about the cramped space and the lack of space in their new apartment. Stephanie suggests they eat outside, as it's a beautiful evening. They open the terrace, which is decorated with twinkling lights and a beautiful view of the sunset.
