OVERVIEW

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, "The Covenant of Water" delves into the life of a family residing in southern India, cursed by a peculiar fate that haunts each generation: the tragic demise of an individual through drowning. In Kerala, a region abundant with water, this recurring tragedy is eerily woven into the fabric of existence.

As the new century dawns, a twelve-year-old girl, grappling with the loss of her father, embarks on a boat journey to her wedding, where she is slated to meet her forty-year-old husband for the very first time. This poignant initiation sets the stage for the story. Guiding us through this remarkable narrative is the young girl, who will evolve into the family's matriarch and be affectionately referred to as Big Ammachi. Her life becomes a witness to seismic shifts both within her home and in the wider world. These changes encompass the spectrum of human experience—love's euphoria and trials, as well as the endurance of hardships.

"The Covenant of Water" stands as a radiant embodiment of a bygone India and the inexorable passage of time itself. It serenades the strides achieved in the realm of medicine and the deepening of human insight. It simultaneously serves as a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by earlier generations for the benefit of people living today. With a rich blend of humor, profound sentiment, and the very essence of existence, the novel stands as a remarkable achievement, showcasing mastery in contemporary literary fiction.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Abraham Verghese is a renowned physician, writer, and educator, known for his contributions to both the medical field and the world of literature. He was born on May 30, 1955, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Indian parents who had emigrated from Kerala, India. Verghese's upbringing in Ethiopia exposed him to a diverse cultural landscape and the complexities of identity, which would later influence his writing.

After completing his primary education in Ethiopia, Verghese moved to the United States to pursue higher education. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the Madras Medical College in India and subsequently completed his residency training in internal medicine at East Tennessee State University. His passion for medicine and patient care led him to specialize in infectious diseases, particularly the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

Beyond his medical pursuits, Verghese developed a profound interest in writing. He began to craft essays and articles that explored the intersection of medicine and humanity. His writing caught the attention of literary publications, gradually establishing him as a voice that could eloquently bridge the medical and literary realms.

Verghese's breakthrough came with the publication of his first book, "My Own Country: A Doctor's Story," published in 1994. This memoir chronicles his experiences as an infectious disease specialist during the early days of the AIDS epidemic in rural Tennessee. The book was critically acclaimed for its compassionate portrayal of patients and their struggles, as well as Verghese's introspective narrative style.
