OVERVIEW

The Fourth Turning provides a captivating and thought-provoking portrayal of historical patterns spanning the past, present, and future. In contrast to the prevailing perspective among contemporary Western societies, which often perceives history as an unbroken linear progression, the book suggests an alternative viewpoint—that history follows a cyclical trajectory, characterized by repeated patterns that emerge in predictable cycles. By studying the ways in which history does indeed repeat itself, we can better prepare ourselves for what is likely to come in the future.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

William Strauss (October 1, 1947 – December 18, 2007) was an American historian, author, and generational theorist. He is best known for his collaboration with Neil Howe in developing the theory of generational cycles and co-authoring several influential books on the subject.

Born in Richmond, Virginia, Strauss pursued his education at Harvard University, where he graduated in 1969. He continued his studies at Harvard Law School, earning his Juris Doctor degree in 1973. Despite his legal training, Strauss found his true passion in historical research and writing.

In the early 1990s, Strauss teamed up with Neil Howe, and together they formulated the theory of generational cycles, which would become the foundation of their collaborative work. They proposed that history moves in predictable cycles of four generational archetypes, each lasting approximately 20 to 25 years. These archetypes include the Hero, Artist, Prophet, and Nomad generations, and they repeat in a fixed sequence, driving the cyclical nature of societal trends, values, and behaviors.

Their groundbreaking book, "Generations: The History of America's Future, 1584 to 2069," published in 1991, introduced this theory to the world and garnered significant attention for its novel insights into the interplay between generations and historical events. This work laid the groundwork for their subsequent books, including "The Fourth Turning," published in 1997, which delved deeper into the concept of cyclical history and its implications for understanding and predicting societal changes.

Strauss and Howe's theories gained prominence for their ability to provide a unique perspective on generational dynamics and their impact on various aspects of society, from politics and economics to culture and technology. Their work found an audience not only among academics and historians but also among policymakers, business leaders, and the general public.

Tragically, William Strauss passed away on December 18, 2007, at the age of 60. Despite his untimely death, his collaborative efforts with Neil Howe continue to shape the way we perceive the interactions between generations and the cyclical patterns that influence the course of history. Strauss's dedication to historical research and his innovative contributions to generational theory have left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire scholars and thinkers to explore the intricate connections between the past, present, and future.

Neil Howe

Neil Howe, born on October 21, 1951, is an American historian, author, and public speaker renowned for his work on generational theory and its applications in understanding societal and historical trends. He earned his bachelor's degree in economics from U.C. Berkeley and pursued further studies at Yale University, where he acquired his PhD in history.

Howe's prominence stems from his collaboration with William Strauss in developing the concept of generational cycles and their impact on history. Their work, notably "Generations" (1991) and "The Fourth Turning" (1997), has garnered attention for its analysis of generational archetypes and their recurring patterns of influence over the course of history.
