Introduction

Bonds are forged through various means, much like battlefields laid by our mistakes and choices in life. Growing up in a poor, South family, the author learned to appreciate things early and appreciate the hard work and relationships that come with it. Growing up in a close family, the author's father was a mason by trade and respected by all who lived next to him. He valued hard work and relationships, and his advice on people and relationships was hard-earned and surprising.

The author's father's outlook on people, relationships, and the bond we share with those in our lives was one of hard-earned perspective and surprising optimism. He knew that lifelong commitment to one another can be lifelong, and it can't be forced, but it is worth the effort. In today's society, we often trade necessary human bonds for efficiency and convenience. For many people in this book, the military provided a lifeline out of that loneliness. Choosing to serve offers people a path to a chosen family, an interwoven network of brothers and sisters who will have their back in adversity.

These blood brothers have spilt blood on faraway battlefields for the same purpose, providing a family that's one phone call away for the rest of one's life. The military offers an escape from an alienated society to one built on lifelong bonds. Amos Benjamin's brother was killed in action, but his friends rallied around him, including Greg Wrubluski, who had found a family in the Marines. This give-and-take is evident in many stories in this book, where bonds formed on the battlefield can remain unbroken if we let them. The author, Lacy Gunnoe, learned the importance of unselfish efforts and genuine concern from friends who became family.

The bonds formed during war and life threw at him were shaped by their faith and mentorship. The author shares the stories of warriors, heroes, and humble Americans who have learned the powerful nature of these unbroken bonds of the battlefield.

Band of Brothers

The Burden of Command

Major, Company Commander (Ret.) Greg Wrubluski

The author shares their personal experience as a Marine EOD technician and how they stepped up to lead an EOD company. They were initially reluctant to join the company, but eventually decided to take the job due to the need for leadership. Greg Wrubluski, a Marine EOD tech, was a strong leader who genuinely cared about his Marines and their safety.

The Marine Corps has a culture of humility, aiming to prevent glory-seekers from making reckless decisions that can lead to injury or death. Greg's selflessness and dedication to his profession make him a unique and exceptional leader. He has risen through the ranks from an enlisted man to an officer, demonstrating his commitment to his duties and the importance of selflessness.

The author emphasizes the inherent bonds and responsibilities of Marines and EOD techs, which involve taking risks and potentially sacrificing themselves for the people they support. The commitment to sacrifice is consistent, but the bond formed during the battle is unique. The author describes their experience at Bolles School, a private school where they were recruited as a group of rednecks and African American students. The school had a military academy affiliation, but the demerit system remained, with points deducted for tardiness and serious offenses. The author's friends and family welcomed them, but it took time for relationships to develop.
