INTRODUCTION
The people which sat in darkness have seen a great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Matthew4:16-17KJV
The word Repent or Repentance is translated from the Greek word, "METANOIA" which means "to turn around" or a "change of mind". You will agree with me that before the coming of Jesus Christ, men has been in darkness, men has been held captive in the valley of shadows of death but at Jesus appearing, He called men unto Repentance, He called those who sat in darkness to "turn around" from darkness unto light, He called those who sat at the valley of the shadow of death to "change their mind" and turn to Him.
Repentance is not change of behavior but a change in the way of thinking or reasoning because Jesus is the thought of God, He is God's thinking pattern for man; look at John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 KJV
"The Word" is translated from the Greek "logos" which means "the logic" or "the thinking pattern". Jesus Christ is the logos, the thinking pattern of God, hence, a call to Repentance is a call to turn away from darkness and to embrace light. It is a call for a change of thought or reasoning, it's a call to allow the word of God to change your world view.
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.[19]If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: [20] but if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it. Isaiah 1:18-20 KJV
Repentance is God's call to all mankind to come and reason together with Him. It doesn't matter what your past might look like, it doesn't matter what you have done or left undone in the past, God through His Son Jesus Christ is making a clarion call which requires your obedience to be able to eat the good of the land which He offers through His sacrifice on the cross.
Repentance happens in the mind; it is not a change of behavior or character modification. You've not repented if all you changed was your character or manner of behavior. Repentance begins by an understanding. Look at Ezekiel 36:26;
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26 KJV
By the prophecy of Ezekiel, God promised man a new heart, which is a new understanding, a new mind, a new thinking pattern. Repentance is a call to come out of thoughts and imaginations that does not measure up to the grace of God. It is also a fulfilment of God's promise to take away the stony heart and to give man a heart of flesh which is His thinking pattern. Repentance is a call to come out of the old and to be in the new.
Jesus Christ is God's heart of flesh to everyone who believes. In God's call for Repentance is a promise to fill the heart of the believers with the mind of Christ.
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Philippians 2:5 KJV
Preaching the gospel is the only medium by which Repentance takes place. The gospel is the mind of God, it is the logos or the thinking pattern of God, thus any man who must turn to God must first align his own thought with God's word. Look at Romans 10: 13-14;
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him no whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? Romans 10:13-14 KJV
Salvation can only be found in the name of the Lord. You're saved because you heard a message in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that changed your mind and you believed it. It is upon that believe that you confessed the name of the Lord and was saved.
We do not go about telling people to change their behaviors; to stop lying, to stop stealing, to stop fornication… that's far from the gospel of salvation. What we preach is the logos, the thinking pattern of God, because that's all that can change sinners, that's all that can make a sinner to turn away from darkness to light.
