The mermaids bay

In Milazzo there is an enchanted place, a bay where they tell Ulysses landed and met Polifemo. On the shore sand you feel like a king, you lie, close your eyes and hear the sea. Sea water whispers of adventures among thousands of waves, of battles fought by Romans and further in the older times of Greek ships that sailed those waves.

In the night, in the bay, the sky can be touched with your fingers, stars are like thousands of bulbs switched on just for you and the moon, adulator hangs in the infinite space.

In the Summer, when the sea is calm, the water is so transparent that stones on the sea bottom can be counted. This place is beautiful even when the sea is rough, during stormy weather waves break against the reefs and look like as if they are singing a tribute to nature, sound and uncontaminated. The waves seem like hands that search with their nails the beach sand, as if they wanted to take it for themselves, they scratch it and in the backwash swallow sand and stones that will then be given back because even they know that this place belongs to everyone. Mothers prefer this bay because it is very easy to reach the sea from here, in the summer you can watch them frolicking, limping on with small buckets, beach umbrellas and toys along with their kids. Lots of love stories were born on that beach. Perhaps for the beauty of the place, perhaps because it is particularly romantic, I do not know, for certain it helps your feelings come out, new and mature.

Even in the past years the beach of “the Mermaids Bay” was well known to everybody, not only to the residents, but to the holiday visitors.

The kids of the nearby orphanage could not wait for summer to arrive because holidays at the beach began for certain at that time. You would see the little boys arrive in large swarms, with their sky blue caps, and the little girls with their pink ones. They were always chaperoned by two small nuns who loved and took care of them with the few means they had at their disposal. Notwithstanding all that, many years ago, there was someone who wanted the mermaids beach only for himself.
