Transterior Exogram

I first met Stefan Barton in 2002 when I was working at the Cambridge Arts Council in Cambridge, MA while he was involved with planning the open studios events for the Cambridgeport Artist Open Studio (CAOS) group. The organization aptly called itself CAOS – and many of us chuckled around the appropriateness of this moniker for the seemingly chaotic group of artists doing great work to share their art with the community. I can still picture walking into the chaos of the room, and seeing Stefan looming over the group – tall and lanky – quietly assembling pieces of paper on a table, attempting to bring order to the confusion and mayhem. This picture in my mind is a perfect illustration of Stefan quietly taking in what’s happening around him, assembling and ordering, then meaningfully reassembling for his purposes.
