Water purification removes contaminants from raw water. This helps to make the water clean and pure enough for people to consume. Not only that, water purification is also made for other purposes, such as:

There are different methods to purify water. Some of them include:

The policies for the quality of drinking water are set by the individual governments. This will include set points on a minimum and maximum scale.
There are some countries that prefer to keep a certain amount of disinfectant (chlorine, for example) in the water after it is processed through the treatment plant. Leaving this in helps lower the risk of water getting contaminated again.
