«I would be willing to give my lifeso that young people understandhow beautiful it is to love God! »
Maria Orsola Bussone
This story is not the usual story about friendship, or almost. By chance, this book is inspired by events that actually happened, or almost... we changed a little here and there, the names, the physical and character characteristics, from blond to dark-haired, from a sulky face to another with an astonished face, some scenarios landscaped as a park rather than a garden, some stories have been emphasized with the addition of some personal reflections. The events, however, are all strictly authentic. Scout's honor! Even if I'm not a scout… well, then you'll have to take our word for it, since we have nothing to lose by stating the truth. Can there be anything more beautiful than the truth?
First of all, you might be wondering who the narrator is, right? Then, I will call myself the voiceover of this story.
If you have a time machine, place it in the late 1990s, or if you have your feet firmly on the ground like me, let yourself be led by the words of my story; let your imagination carry you away. You will be gently accompanied through memories.
However, before taking this dive into the past, it is necessary to briefly describe the two protagonists who are about to give life to the beginning of the story: Monica and Chiara.
What strikes people about Monica is her hazel, doe-like look with thick, long, curved eyelashes that attract attention to herself in any crowded or not-crowded place. Do you know the intense expression of someone who seems to know everything about you? Those sweet but deep eyes that, at times, are embarrassing because they give the impression of reading inside you? Well, she is one of those people. Monica hugs everyone, hugging them tightly with sincere affection. She is moved by the scene or phrase of a love film, a wedding, or the theme song of a cartoon that reminds her of when she played as a child. Sometimes she wrinkles her nose when she is embarrassed. She often runs because she is busy with so many commitments, and when it rains, she jumps on tiptoe to try not to get dirty. Taking on a rigid figure with held-back shoulders, she wiggles her arms to collect her honey-coloured hair with the first thing that comes to hand, such as a cap, a pen, a hat, a bag, and even the shopping bag if necessary. She has a well-defined facial expression. If she is tense, for example, you can see it on her face as her eyes widen, her cheeks stiffen, and her amber colour suddenly fades. She certainly exudes a particular light that is noticeable. In short, Monica is the classic person who sees the world as pink with little flowers everywhere.
Chiara, take my word for it, is a singular type. She loves to caress the short, wavy locks of her jet-black hair with her fingertips, but pulling small locks in every possible direction whenever a strong emotion makes her soul vibrate. Every situation that gives her some sort of emotional reaction: anger, heartbeat, fear, her hair takes a different turn. For example, every time Chiara receives a compliment, she doesn't just pass the index finger and thumb of both hands under the nape of her neck to lay her hair obliquely and downwards, but her sly petrol-green eyes close, drawing curves plump upwards with happiness on his face. At the same time, the undulating movements of her long-limbed body seem to close themselves off from the world, shaping a crossed posture of both knees and feet, repeatedly overlapping. This girl, in her somewhat introverted nature, but only in appearance, is shy, prudent, very nice, and, let me tell you, attractive like few others.
I got lost in the description and no longer know how to continue telling the story... Er... I'm there! So, let's continue...
About twenty years ago, when everything seemed to flow peacefully, Monica, a young student, lived in peace.
She was preparing to take her second diploma exam: she wanted to become a nursery school teacher. Parallel to her life and at the same time as that moment, another girl named Chiara, also a student, was hastily preparing to reach her university.
That day, Chiara left home, as always, to head to university.
Something happened to both girls with backpacks on their shoulders, between studying and various extracurricular activities, busy like many young people. That day that radically changed the course of their lives. Monica decided not to be accompanied by her best friend Domenico (and, between us, her future boyfriend). Instead, she took the bus to stop and buy a book in Salerno, a city not far from the school centre where she would have had to take the exam as a private individual. At the same time, Chiara took the car and stopped in the centre of Salerno to buy a book too before entering her university faculty. Again, by chance, at the same time, on the same day, in the same bookshop with the fiery red sign, "Books of the Heart," the same literary department, i.e., "fiction," the two girls collided on their backs, causing them to fall. each other's book, they turned around together, apologized together, hit their heads together while bending down to pick up each other's book, looked into each other's eyes, and started laughing out loud. I think they also thought the same thing: “There is another person as clumsy as me.”
Monica, trying unsuccessfully to hold back her laughter, said,
“My goodness! Excuse me!”
