Down along the Muddy Fork River was an old one-room shack, and living in that shack was a feeble-minded old man by the name of Walter Napier. Since Walter had no kinfolks to look after him, Charlie Cornelius felt sorry enough to build him a crude place to live in. Walter helped out around Charlie's farm since he was not smart enough to hold down a proper job.
Walter cooked for himself on an old wood-burning stove that Charlie gave him and seemed to be able to pretty much take care of himself. The folks here in Muddy Fork treated him well, knowing his condition. He walked everywhere, unless someone stopped their corn wagon to give him a ride. He was pretty dirty most of the time, wearing the same old clothes, day in and day out. Charlie tried to get him to understand that he really needed to bathe himself and wash his clothes, but Walter paid him no mind. Mammy says that if being dirty and nasty all the time will kill a body, Walter should have been dead and gone a long time ago.
Walter never missed a church meeting at the Little Goose Chapel Church. It didn't matter how hard it would be raining on a Sunday, Walter would walk to church through the downpour. He never missed a service! We often heard him out on the wagon roads, singing old gospel songs as he made his way, followed by his three old faithful hound dogs. Those dogs seemed to be like his guardians, never letting him out of their sight.
