Some people choose to be travelers, while others are forced, by neglect and mistreatment, to leave their lives behind, constantly traveling without a home to return to. This story is about a man who was abandoned by his parents, forcing him to ride the rails from town to town, finding work wherever and whenever he can. After young Jake Wagers meets the wayward traveler one afternoon, his life is changed for the better. There are great lessons to be learned from a man who has experienced so much of the world, lessons that will change the way Jake views his own existence. A Muddy Fork Short Story

The Wayward Traveler

While walking home to Muddy Fork I met an old man that was just hobbling along. He was wearing an old button down plaid jacket, completely worn at the elbows and his scruffy pants had seen better days.  When he saw me, he smiled, so I would know he was a good man who meant no harm.

I was tired from a long day’s work, so I was slow to catch up with the man.  Wishing I didn’t have to get up every day and walk all the way to the next county, just to have some pocket money.  Ma and Pa told me I could keep staying under their roof, so long as I did my share of chores, went to church on Sundays and had myself a proper job.  Sometimes I got so darn mad at them for making me work so hard, and today was one of those days.

“Jake Wagers is my name. What is your name? I asked as I finally came up beside the old man.  I decided to take my time getting home, stopping to talk with this strange man.

“My name is Daniel Cob, and I am glad to meet you Jake Wagers,” the old man grinned and answered.

“I have never seen you around these parts before,” I said.

“Well boy, today you’re looking at a hobo of twenty-five years. I rode the train rails into this fair county and liked the looks of these green ridges. I decided I would stay around here and try to find me a day or two’s work before I journey onward to somewhere else,” Daniel explained.

I looked in awe at Daniel. “I often wonder what it would be like to travel the country and get to admire all the sites that a man could run across.  Your way of life sounds like a great, carefree adventure.”
