Big Mama of the Mountain

Most women in these parts of Muddy Fork are just ordinary women, but the one who is called “Big Mamma” is certain an exception. She has a mess of kids and has never been married.

.Pa says none of the kids has the same daddy. Ma declares it to be a downright shame! Twelve kids and another one on the way.Big Mamma rents a big, two-story shack from old Water Britton. It’s the only two-story shack in these parts. It has a full porch in the front, and those brats of hers have the yard bare of any grass.

.Many of the women folk around here don’t like her name even mentioned. Her kids of hers are taught to steal garden vittles in the summertime. They roam around like wild quail while other folk sleep. They steal chickens and any other eatable things they can get their hands on.

Pa said there should be a law about folks having so many brats. Some say Big Mamma peddles moonshine whiskey, but so far she’s not been caught by Sheriff Walker Westbrook.

There’s going to be a township meeting next week, and some say it’s been called to see what to do about Big Mamma and those mess of kids.

Folks are getting tired of having their garden stuff stolen, and never being able to catch the thieves. Ma and Pa plan to attend the town meeting and I plan to go along with them.
