All the men in Denver Short's little saloon in Muddy Fork looked up from their drinks when they saw Harvey Lawson and Lester French swagger through the doors of the bar. Everyone knew that the two men had been feuding over a land boundary and tonight the matter was to be settled once and for all. .
As I watched the two big men approach one of the drinking tables situated very close to where me and my buddy, Harlow Smith, were seated, I thought that a saloon was hardly a proper place to settle a dispute. I noticed that they both carried pistols in their back pockets, with the handles sticking out.
The place got quiet real fast, and some of the timber men and coalminers got up and left, figuring they didn’t want to see a killing, or be killed – or have to be a witness to a killing in court.
After Lester summoned Denver Short to bring them over a bottle of Wild Turkey with two glasses, it wasn’t difficult to overhear their conversation.
Harvey pushed his hat back on his head and leaned forward. “Now, Lester, we’re here to settle our land dispute, and I want you to know that your fence sits four feet onto my land.”
Lester clenched his fists, a vein in his forehead throbbing. “Now listen to me, Harvey. I’m an honest man and I’ll be dogged if what you are saying is the truth.”
