The Mule Thief

"How many men do you know who have a wooden leg, one blind eye and cannot hear hardly a lick," Pa asked Deputy Henderson.

"Just one and that's Clovis Pruitt."

"You're right," said Pa. "He lost his leg when a mule kicked him in the knee so hard it caused the doctor to remove his entire leg and he lost his eye in a rock fight with his mother-in-law, when he was blasting fish out of the Muddy Fork River with dynamite. If anything more happens to him, there won't be much of him left. So what's he in jail for this time?"

"He was caught down near Lick Fork with a mule he had stolen over in Taylor County," said the deputy.

"When will he be hanged?"

"In two weeks, after the judge gets back to Muddy Fork and arranges a trial by jury."

Pa rubbed his neck and frowned. "It's a shame a man has to hang over stealing a mule."

"Well, the law books say a horse or mule thief will be hanged by the neck until he be dead," the deputy reminded Pa. "Clovis says he found the mule wandering down the old Piney Road along the Muddy Fork River. He claims he was going to take it to its rightful owner, but I didn't believe him."

"Like I said before, it’s a shame a man has to die for stealing a mule."

"Well, it will bring a lot of sightseers in from Taylor County and some money will be spent at the day of the hanging. You must admit, it will help Muddy Fork to have a little money floating around."

Pa didn't look convinced. "Clovis helped me gather corn in the fall one year and he was a good worker. I'd hate to see him be hanged," Pa said in a mournful voice.
