Through empathy and understanding, we can create a more inclusive world. But empathy and understanding are not purely intellectual--they require application. In the Demystifying Diversity Workbook, Biracial journalist Daralyse Lyons offers tangible tools for moving beyond biases and increasing one's capacity for connection. This workbook is meant to act as a companion to Demystifying Diversity: Embracing our Shared Humanity, in which Daralyse Lyons reveals her most important takeaways from her interviews with more than 100 individuals about a variety of topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion. Here, you are invited to go deeper, to move from awareness to action and to develop your capacity for authentic connection. It is in this space that empathy and equity become possible.
"We're Venn diagrams in Venn diagrams. And so, if you can't find those connections, it means you're not looking."
-- Alisa Kraut, assistant curator at the National Museum of American Jewish History
"Every single one of us is personally implicated in this."
-- Cinder Kuss, liberation and social justice activist
"I don't think you can be an honest observer of the human condition without being overwhelmed at times by the cruelty that gets visited on people; this seems to be so counter to who we are. We're beautiful. Every one of us is beautiful. There is nothing like a human being in this world that we experience. We are remarkable."
-- Dennis Moritz, poet and playwright
"Demystifying Diversity: Embracing Our Humanity is an important step in our collective, arduous, complex journey towards inclusivity."
-- Kyle V. Hiller, award winning arts & culture journalist, interdisciplinary artist, author of The Recital

Introduction
If you have purchased a copy of the Demystifying Diversity Workbook, I commend you. It’s one thing to feel for those we believe to be different than ourselves; it’s another to actively grapple with our biases and be willing to move beyond them. Yet, it is in this space that empathy and equity become possible. If you find yourself looking at the world—and wishing things could be better—know that real change begins with us. It starts with people like you and me and the wonderful individuals who contributed their wisdom and insights to the Demystifying Diversity project. It starts by acknowledging the problems and empowering ourselves and our communities to take an active role in the solution.
The results of oppression are all too evident. Systemic change is necessary. But, since individuals comprise and participate in systems, until more of us expand our capacity for empathy, things can’t get better. I don’t mean to be pessimistic. In fact, I have the utmost confidence in human beings. When we love one another, all things are possible. The problem is that we don’t do a very good job of loving one another because of our learned discrimination and dehumanization. This workbook is meant to teach you how to love yourself and others, or, at the very least, behave with kindness and compassion in the hope that your heart will shift with the continued application of new actions and ideas.
This workbook is meant to act as a companion to the book Demystifying Diversity: Embracing Our Shared Humanity. I would encourage you to work through the book and the workbook simultaneously, stopping at the end of each chapter to do the corresponding workbook exercises before returning to your reading. However, if you want to utilize this workbook without reading the accompanying book, that is fine. You won’t gain a larger context, but it’s far better to apply the principles of love and connection than not to do so.
You can engage with this workbook and its exercises on your own or with others, as part of a book group or with a friend or family member. It can be a wonderfully enriching experience to share your process as you move forward. Again, I admire your courage and I know that this workbook will be incredibly beneficial for you and for others. Join me on this journey to demystify diversity and to find the shared humanity that exists within all of us.
