About the Author
By Melanie Shankle
I first met Tara in the middle of her family’s famous restaurant, Royers Round Top Café, in Round Top, Texas. It was packed and overflowing as it always is during Spring Antique Week, yet she had graciously reserved a last-minute spot at a table for my friends and me. We should have made arrangements months ago, but we hadn’t even thought to! This was my first time dining at Royers, and it only took one bite of my meal to understand why their reservation book fills up weeks in advance.
The thing that stood out to me more than the dinner and the pies (oh, the pies. Yes, that’s plural. Don’t judge me. I could write love songs about the pies.) was the graciousness and hospitality of our hostess for the evening. Tara wrapped me up in one of her hugs like we were old friends instead of new acquaintances. And I watched as she made everyone else in her path feel the same way that evening. I knew immediately that she was the real deal.
A few months later, I was talking to my publisher about where I could film the video portion of my Bible study, Church of the Small Things, and I knew just the place. With some hesitation, I emailed Tara and asked if we could use Royers for a recording session. It felt like a big ask because I know how busy they are and how much they have going on at all times. I can’t tell you how thrilled I was when she said Royers would be happy to oblige because here’s the thing: Church of the Small Things is about letting God use you exactly where you are to do all of the day-to-day things that might seem insignificant but are actually making a big difference in the lives around you. I couldn’t think of anyone who lives that out more than Tara.
Tara has bloomed right where God has planted her in spite of struggles, obstacles, and often roughness of her path. The longer I live, the more I watch to see how someone truly lives as rather than simply listen to the words they say. Talk is cheap in this world of social media and clever Instagram captions. As I got to know Tara, I quickly learned that she lives every bit of what she proclaims to believe. She serves her family and the world around her. She invests in her community and finds ways to make it better. She loves with her whole heart, and if she tells you she’s praying for you, then she absolutely means it. She talks about being brave and then actually takes huge leaps of faith to try something new. She’s not afraid to dig right into the messiest parts of life to find healing and wholeness.
And I’m not saying she’s perfect. She’d be the first to tell you she’s not, which is one of the many reasons I find her so endearing. She bares her heart, soul, and all of her flaws. She isn’t afraid to share the not-so-pretty parts of her story. I am not one for small talk, and I appreciate a person who isn’t afraid to dive right in. That’s Tara. She dives right in to all the joy, pain, growth, and challenges that life has to offer and trusts God to guide her steps when the way doesn’t seem clear.
The bottom line is I love Tara Royer Steele. She’s real, she’s funny, she’s bold, and she can make a pie so good that you’ll decide your new diet is a pie for every meal and a prayer for a miracle for your cholesterol and blood sugar. As you read the pages of this book, I have no doubt you will fall in love with her heart, her cooking, and her passion to follow God wherever he leads.

Hey, friend! I am so glad you are here! Sit down and make yourself comfortable. Grab a big ole cup of coffee and your favorite blanket and get cozy.
I wrote this book picturing God sitting right next to me, asking him which parts of my story, which hard-learned lessons, which victories and joys he wanted me to share. He answered me with pictures and with words, each of which I’ve done my best to put on paper to share with y’all. I’m also sharing with you some of my favorite recipes that I’ve gathered along this journey; some I’ve created when I just needed some quiet time with God, and some I’ve made with friends and family during celebrations. Together, the words and the recipes create a story of grace, hope, and love. My prayer for every one of you is that you’ll find a quiet space and see that you are worth this time of leaning in to him. Let God lead you through these pages just like he led me.
But before we get started, I just want to remind you of a few things:
You are loved.
You are seen.
You are worthy.
