1. INTRODUCTION

Introduction

There are hundreds of varieties of the Ficus Bonsai, but the most popular one is the Ficus Retusa, which is often shaped in an s-curved trunk and has oval, dark green leaves. The Ficus is a tropical plant, native to Southeast Asia, where it grows mostly on forest floors. This native habitat explains the popularity of the Ficus as indoor Bonsai: it is an incredibly strong plant and tolerant of poor light, similar to our living room conditions. The Tigerbark, Willow leaf, Golden Gate and Taiwan varieties are quite similar to the Retusa.

The Ficus Ginseng is another popular tree. It has a thick, pot-bellied trunk, similar to the Ginseng root. Usually the branches on this tree are grafted from the Ficus microcarpa. This is the plant that is often sold at stores like Walmart and Ikea.

The surface roots of Ficus trees are often very impressive, a feature highly valued for Bonsai trees. Aerial roots can develop in areas with high humidity. These Banyan style roots hang down from the lower branches until they reach the surface and slowly grow thicker.

The care guidelines for each of the varieties we just discussed are very similar.

Let's get started with the first chapter, about Ficus Bonsai care!

2. TECHNIQUES

FICUS BONSAI CARE

As I explained in the introduction, the Ficus is a very strong plant. It is tolerant to poor light and low humidity, which makes it an excellent plant to keep in our living rooms as indoor Bonsai. If there is any tree species I would recommend to start with indoors, it would be the Ficus.

In this chapter we'll discuss the best location to place your Ficus, and techniques like watering, fertilizing and repotting.
