INTRODUCTION
Junipers are incredibly strong trees, and can handle aggressive pruning as well as small errors in Bonsai care, which explains its popularity as a Bonsai tree species. The juniper is a genus of about sixty species within the cypress family. Juniper Bonsai trees sold at large stores, including Walmart and Home Depot, are often Japanese Garden Junipers, also called Green Mound Junipers (Juniperusprocumbens nana).

Other popular species are:
the Chinese juniper (
Juniperus chinensis
)
the Japanese Shimpaku (
Juniperus sargentii
)
the Japanese needle juniper (
Juniperus rigida
)
the Savin (
Juniperus sabina
)
the Common juniper (
Juniperus communis
)
the California Juniper (
Juniperus californica
)
the Rocky Mountain Juniper (
Juniperus scopulorum
)
and the Sierra Juniper (
Juniperus occidentalis
)
All these varieties are evergreen, coniferous trees, with very similar care guidelines. Keep in mind that all Junipers should be kept outdoors, year-round. They will not survive in the dry, warm and poorly lighted environment of our living rooms. Some protection from frost can be required in winter, we'll talk about that in the next chapter.
The foliage of a Juniper can either be scale-like or needle-like. Scale junipers usually have needle-like foliage when they are young (called juvenile foliage). The typical scale-like foliage appears later.

Junipers are very suitable for creating deadwood parts on branches and trunks (called Jin and shari). The triad of green foliage, reddish-brown bark and silvery white deadwood is very appealing.
Let's get started with the first chapter, about Juniper care!
