King Agur was one of those that contributed to the book of Proverbs, and his writings only came up in the thirtieth chapter of this wisdom book of the Bible. Although there is no record of king Agur in the bible, yet I think, he was one of the acquaintances of the wise King Solomon. His writing style is not too different from King Solomon’s and it is filled with mysteries.

King Agur seemed to be writing to a specific audience; he was writing to those who are still weighing their options as to what to do with their lives, and those who are open-minded to understand the deep things of the wise. He was also writing to those who have made the right choice on how to enjoy themselves in their chosen ways of life as well as to encourage and give hope to everyone who seems to have delay in getting result of his chosen good way of life.

My friend, the future awaits your arrival in style, and you have to start at it now, regardless of your age and what you have gone or are going through. Your decisions today work out your tomorrow. So, define your future well from now.

The wise king was careful in selecting his words and things to compare certain lifestyles with. Join me in exploring King Agur’s 3 but 4 so that we can unveil the mysteries contained therein. Keep your notepad with you so that you can pen down some of the things that strike your heart and so you can use them to put some things in order in your life. And when you are through with the book, I want you to recommend it to everyone you can reach, they will appreciate you for it.

Part 1: The Insatiable

…There are three things that are never satisfied–no, four that never say, “Enough!”: the grave, the barren womb, the thirsty desert, the blazing fire. Proverbs 30:15-16

Introduction

All scriptures are said to be written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16) and some things just prove it right. It is indeed amazing how King Agur arranged the four things that are insatiable. He talked about the grave that swallows up lifeless bodies, then the barren that desires to produce life. One embraces death while the other embraces life. He went further to talk about thirsty desert that desires more and more water, and we know that water is essential in life sustainability. And he talked about fire that never stops until it has burnt all that is available to be burnt.

King Agur was actually discussing a new creation reality. So, before I delve into the insatiable three but four, I want to explain what it means to have life.

When the bible says, “…whosoever believes him shall not perish…” one would think that “perish” means literal death. But on a closer look, you will realize that the “whosoever” is already living literally and already perished in a sense, and that is why Jesus presents life to him. The bible says that someone who is already breathing will have life. What kind of life is the bible referring to? Everybody is living before he gives his life to Christ, so, what’s the difference since the breathing rate didn’t change?

The bible says that people perish without vision. This means that vision has a direct link to the life that Christ gives. The first thing that God gave man after creating him was a purpose to fulfill – a vision to accomplish. People perish without vision also implies that people perish without Christ who is God’s purpose for mankind.

Again, the bible says that people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. To be destroyed is to perish. And that is why God said in the same verse that “…because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you.” John 1:4 says that life is light and we know that light is knowledge. Whenever there is illumination, people comprehend easily.

So, with an understanding that life is both purpose and knowledge, we can now proceed to understand what the inspired King Agur was trying to pass across when he wrote this particular three but four.

The First: The Grave

The grave never seems to want to stop swallowing wealth from the earth. We are told that the grave is the richest community on the planet because of the unharnessed potentials that lie there. And it seems easy to just head toward the grave because that is the way that many people are heading. It’s easier to join in the queue. It seems pointless to try to know where else to turn or how else to live. It always seems better to stick to the “easy” than to search out and go for the “possible”.

The grave is full of lifelessness. It is the point where all things perish. It is the place where people are without vision – no reason to live and no reason to die. It is a place filled with people without God’s guidance. The grave is a place filled with people without light – without knowledge – for “…people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” And how many people do we have going that ways?! Too many to count! The way to the grave is the only way that always seem right to people. It holds the favor of the majority. It is the wide road that accommodates the multitude.

Every time I check out the account of creation, I see it well spelt out that there is a reason why God created man. But we have chosen not to satisfy that purpose; everyone chooses the life of dump circles. The percentage of the people doing it right is really alarming – 0.1% according to Ecclesiastes 7:27-29. When will the grave ever stop calling for more people? I guess it will never stop calling. But when will people stop heeding its call? I guess that is dependent on everyone who decides to swim against the tides.
