Heart of Darkness

“To see a candle’s light one must take it to a dark place.” Ursula K. Le Guin

Chapter 1

Imperial Army forces scrambled all over the grounds of Spire Sol. Maximal the inner most island of the Purple Archipelago and home to the Cannonade was being attacked. Five Imperial Battalions had deployed to the border to quell some skirmish that had evolved into an all out melee between Fedpo, Shuga and it’s contemporaries, and the Overworld companies Archaik and Shroud. The only battalion that remained to guard the Cannonade’s mansion was it’s most dangerous. The Major Warfare Unit. Personally selected and trained by Stephen Drosselmeyer they were the Imperials most dangerous unit.

Stephen watched from the balcony Meredith standing beside him. “It’s quite puzzling that the councils would conspire against us as they have.” Meredith said. “We forced their hand sometime ago.” “You expected this?” “More or less. As long as we have these titleholders like The Cathedra around we will have these incidents from time to time.” “This feels wholly different.” Meredith said eyes widening. “How so?” “I found out from Belson that Zaikiya is still alive.” “What?!” Stephen said his gaze sharpening as his posture stiffened. “The Lodestar.” Meredith said. “What could she possibly want with that..?” Stephen said turning to his sister. She looked back with wide blank eyes. “She wouldn’t dare…” Meredith said aloud.

Hearing the words should have offered some comfort, put a halt to the growing dread that was filling their souls. Instead the words bounced around the large room hollowly off the walls. “Once we clear the skirmish at the border…” An explosion rocked the entire spire both made eye contact eyes wide. The thought was etched into both of their features, shock and awe. Another explosion resounded threatening to eliminate their purchase. “Deploy the MWU around the spire!” “Done. Seems we will be having visitors after all.” Stephen said.

Roman Abioye walked across the lush grasses of the courtyard of Spyre Sol, up to the front gates his Beast Patrol appearing behind him. It had all been about this moment. He had repayed all that were responsible for Yorinn’s demise, all but The Cannonade. As they stepped through the gates a large bolt of purple lightning crashed down in his path. Roman halted ozone polluting the air. “The Cathedra? What an unpleasant surprise. How dare you set foot on sacred ground.” Meredith Drosselmeyer said eyeing him with contempt. Her eyes sparking with bolts of purple lightning. “Sacred ground? That’s rich.” Roman said eyes glowing crimson. “You’ve needed a lesson in humility since you defeated Palmur. My Moon Children and I will make it so.” Meredith said Six beams of silver mana descending and landing around her.

Six warriors appeared on her flanks all wearing the pink and blue of the Imperial Army. The lead female had long teal hair parted down the middle her bangs covering her eyes. Two weapons were sheathed across her back diagonally. Another female that was shorter had red hair streaked with cherry red. Four males looked down at him the tallest of which had cropped black hair and cold grey eyes. The next tallest man had tied white hair and icy blue eyes with a touch of vacant madness. The next tallest male had a ring through his septum a gigantic war axe in hand. The shortest male wore black warpaint and had two long braids his eyes glowing white hot. “Moon Children? What is this some type of hippie cult?” “I assure you, my children are no laughing matter.” Roman tilted his head looking at the female with teal hair. “Corrigun Blu. Long time no see.” “You certainly aren’t the pudgy runt you used to be.” Corrigun said. “You have no idea.” Roman Abioye said drawing his arming sword Bluush. The crimson blade singing as he brandished it. “Dispatch this peasant.” Meredith said with a dismissive wave of her hand her dress blowing in the prevailing wind. “My Czarnia.” all said. Roman felt all six mana s building. Transmutates had some of the most potent manas in the three realms. Roman smiled his grill gleaming top and bottom. Meredith’s eyes narrowed. What an ungrateful brat.

Michael flew over the battlefield searching for Robespierre’s mana. In the commotion he’d fallen back and out of sight. Slippery prick. He’d gone around toppling kingdoms facing off against the best of all three realms and now he was running? No, he was using his rage against him, he’d been on 10 since the Robespierres visited Ashli and Ziggy. He landed surveying the carnage unfolding around him, Fedpo was fighting one of The twins crazy allies a serpent man a towering monster with blue and white scales. All three battalions of The Adamantine were engaging this creature-and losing. He couldn’t really find it in his heart to feel bad for them. He tensed sensing an acute mana incoming from behind whirling and avoiding a golden blade held by one Maxmillian Robespierre. “Impressive. Shame we can’t find common ground lad.” Michael glared at him with icy blue eyes. He drew his weapons starting forward onyx energy erupting around him. Shadow mana creeping over his body Michael shot forward kicking his leg out. “Umbra Verve!” Michael roared driving into Maxmillian center mass. His eyes bulged as he was blown back by the force of Michael’s blow. Michael back flipped landing on his feet watching Maxmillian surge backwards. Now he felt a bit better.

Chapter 2

Waarp drove towards Pique attacking and defending at once energy tendrils stabbing and swarming at him. Walls of earth rose around him covering his blind spots, Pique roared Waarp’s mana surging around him violent jade sparks of mana formed a cloud of spiraling light their weapons clashing violently. In a frenzy of concentrated enmity they shook everything around them with each attack and parry. Waarp knew in his heart he would have to stop Pique not out of hatred but because he was that dangerous. He couldn’t allow him to get into his head space. They had to stop Fyrebrand more specifically; Pique. He wasn’t a fan of humanity, he understood though that everyone wasn’t the same. Pique’s mouth opened wide toxic orange mana gathering brightly. A blast of violet mana ejected from his mouth toward his enemy. “Alright then.” Waarp said stamping the ground with his foot.
