Published in 1988, The Skull Island (Groosham Grange in the original version) is a sort of modern fantasy fairy tale with hints of absurdist humour. It is the story of a 12-year-old boy, David Elliot, who manages to overcome parental and school obstacles and build himself up as a teenager, with the help of a whole series of strange characters.
The ironic writing, the presence of symbols, the fine allusions to present-day society and the lively rhythm of the dialogues makes the text very rich. The Island of the Skull was awarded the European Children's Novel Prize of the city of Poitiers in 1993.
