THE MONKEY AND THE ORANGE TREE
Cast of characters:
Jepetto, a Poor Beggar,
Queen Jasmine, an Egyptian Queen,
Le Sange, A Monkey.
SCENE ONE
QUEEN JASMINE’S Courtyard, ancient Egypt. Several beggars are milling around. In the center is a small table with a chair beside it. A man sits feeding a monkey.
JEPETTO
Eat little one.
He holds a bit of bananna for the monkey to eat. The monkey eats and licks its fingers.
JEPETTO
I will wait for Queen Jasmine even if it takes all day, all week, all year. I crave her beauty, her essence, her smell.......
Queen Jasmine emerges from the castle.
QUEEN JASMINE
Did someone say “smell?” In reference to her highness?
JEPETTO
I am so terribly sorry your highness, I didn’t mean to insinuate that you smell, in any sense. It’s your perfume, your citrus scent, your delicate balance of femaleness and musk....
The monkey is fascinated by the purple amulet on the Queen. He grabs for it.
QUEEN JASMINE
I say! You are a savage little creature now, aren’t you?
The monkey nods and hops off of the table and does a savage little dance on the ground. The Queen is in hysterics.....
JEPETTO
Please! Forgive Le Sange, he is a bit of a clown and he just cannot behave himself in the presence of a beautiful woman such as yourself......
QUEEN JASMINE
Enough of your grovelling Jepetto. I demand that we dine in the country tommorrow afternoon, in the shade of the orange groves. And bring your nasty, beastly puppet with you. I dare say I do find him quite amusing.....
JEPETTO
Yes. We shall be there.
SCENE TWO
THE ORANGE GROVES. A feast is laid out on the ground on top of a white tablecloth. Queen Jasmines procession has made it’s way to the top of the hill. Several slaves
carry baskets on their heads. She dismisses them. Jepetto and Le Sange sit quietly in the shade.
QUEEN JASMINE
Thank you for coming good friend. Please help yourself. There’s goat, ostrich, quail meat and some lovely pomegranites, dates and figs.
JEPETTO
‘Tis such a wondrous feast for a poor beggar like me.
