Eight years ago, far off from the lively and beautiful forest hills, there existed a small village resting near a river in front of it. The houses were shaped like the shrines the residents would go to pray, many red colored lanterns hung from the front of the buildings or from thick pieces of black thread connected to the buildings surrounding everyone. Everything looked rather old fashioned which truth to be, it was, for the residents have been living this way for thousands of years even after the humans who have roamed these hills with them have developed into something more modern over the years.
Wandering the streets of the village itself were foxes with coats that were as white and pure as the snow that would fall in the deepest parts of winter. Some were walking from house to house or heading into a little marketplace that rested in the middle of the village, the hems of their kimonos or yukatas dragging along the ground, hiding their back paws and randomly numbered tails. Not all of the foxes wore the soft fabric, several of them had strong, sturdy sets of samurai armor and carried sharp swords in holders with leather belts.
Off from the village, there were several lands of mounted dirt that were surrounded by a long wooden fence built from Japanese cedar or cypress found within the forest hills or on the outer parts of the village. A hoe smacked itself into the dirt with great force from a stronger creature, raised up and smacked itself back into the dirt, creating a small mount in the dirt. A paw reached into a small bag an older nine-tailed fox had tied around his waist, pulling out a pawful of seeds. Tilting his head and the straw hat that rested on the top, he threw the seeds, letting them fall into the mounts he had created then picked up a watering can and watered them.
He wiped a layer of sweat off his brow and looked out toward several other wooden fences where a group of other fox farmers were working within, some of them were bending over and pulling out full grown green plants and placing them inside a straw basket to bring back to the village to prepare into rice to sell at the marketplace for their world famous Japanese dishes.
Walking among these other foxes in the village, there was a rather tall slender white nine-tailed fox wearing a red kimono that swept past her hind legs and back paws, dragging along the ground, so the hem was dusty. A dark red sash was tied around her middle along with some light brown string around the long piece of fabric, holding it in place. Her white fur was soft, silky and shone like a white pearl in the sun. Her muzzle was a few inches long but she carried a set of slitted blue sapphire eyes and slick eyelashes that fluttered and flapped when she blinked.
Standing and walking beside the older fox were two young foxes, a black one and a white one that was as white as the other foxes living in the village. The black fox had his head bowed low to the ground, ears pinned down against his head, trying to hide his face into the red fabric of his yukata from the dozens of onlookers who were still staring at him like the unwanted pest that he knew he was. A black fox in a white fox village? What a bad omen that was!
A group of two-tailed white foxes who just so happened to be walking by the trio, grinned evilly at each other then carefully approached the group, throwing hurtful jeers and rocks at the black fox, the latter having to lift his head up from the ground quick as a ninja and jump out of the way to avoid the projectiles. He scrambled on all four paws and hid behind the two white foxes, the older of which gritted her teeth and glared furious daggers at the group of bullies. Upon seeing her, the group went from smug to scared in less than two seconds and they immediately bowed to her to try to gain her forgiveness.
