Prologue

I woke up to the sound of my work phone going off. I groggily rolled over, grabbed my cell phone from my nightstand, and glanced at the screen.

Code BLK

15 dead from unknown causes. Immediate assistance is required.

I let out a grumble as I sat up. Some people never knew when to stop messing with dangerous forces.

I sent a mental wake-up call to my partner via the soulbond. I had to send an extra hard 'kick' before Audrey responded and pulled herself from her latest conquest. Thank the gods for soundproof walls.

I walked over to my dresser and pulled out a pair of jeans and a long-sleeved sweater. I strolled into the bathroom and proceeded to get ready in a speedy 5 minutes.

I clipped my badge to my belt and grabbed my jacket from its hanging spot. I reloaded my gun and placed its holster at my hip. Then I fastened my mystic blades Cerridwen and Morrigan to my back.

I opened my door to leave and found Amara and Audrey already waiting. Well, leaning against the doorframe would be more accurate.

"Glad you could drag yourself from your latest conquest long enough to do your job, Audrey," I said with a smirk.

Audrey grinned at me and shrugged unrepentantly. "What can I say? The ladies love to get a piece of this cake." She drawled, grinning perversely.

I rolled my eyes. "Right, and how did your aforementioned conquest react to you sneaking off into the night?" I asked dryly. Audrey smirked. "She's in my bed, awaiting my return," Amara responded confidently.

"Hopeless," I grumbled.

Audrey laughed but clung to my arm as I teleported to our destination.

Chapter 1: Samhain

As we approached the gate, a fireball flew past me, hitting a tombstone. The tombstone blew up and sent me flying backward.

I crashed into a nearby oak, knocking the wind out of me. Shards of granite embedded themselves in my face and hands. A larger piece had sliced through the denim, slicing into my side.

I lay there, stunned, struggling to catch my breath.

Silver and amethyst flames shot from my outstretched hand, wrapping around the sorceress. They wrapped tighter around her, snuffing her existence in an explosion of ash and blood.

The force of the implosion sent me flying. I missed the tree and landed in a ditch. I lay there, staring at the night sky, too stunned to move.

The wraiths, zombies, ghouls, and bone walkers were gone and destroyed along with their mistress.

I slowly sat up, wincing a little, as my body protested the abuse I'd taken. I gingerly removed my jacket, wincing as my wounds

"Iris? Where are you?" Audrey called out.

I let out a long string of curse words as I dug shards of granite from my skin. I could feel my skin knitting itself back together, leaving nothing but faint scarring. Just another night on the job. I need to find a new form of employment.

Audrey popped up in front of me. "Have I ever mentioned that I hate Halloween?" I grumbled peevishly. Audrey laughed as she helped me to my feet. "Oh, come on, Iris, it's not that bad." Audrey teased.

Now let's get going before the humans spot us." I said. "Okay. Are you good to portal us back home?" Audrey asked. "Yes. No promises about a smooth landing, though." I warned. "I injured myself once," Audrey grumbled.

I opened the portal, cutting off Audrey's complaints. She let out a startled shriek as she was sucked inside.

The portal spat us out just outside of Gwunfer. I stumbled a little but quickly regained my footing. Lucille landed next to me nearly face planting in the process. I quickly caught her and helped keep her upright.

Audrey looked at me with a displeased scowl. Her normally perfect hair was a mess of disheveled chestnut curls, and the expression on her face was priceless. It took all my power to not start laughing like a pack of crazed hyenas.

Chapter 2: Unwelcome Guests

I was met with the only man I know on the other side of the veil that was taller than my 5'10". My ex-fiancé by betrothal Xander.

Xander looked the same as he always did. Long burgundy hair that fell past his shoulders and piercing green eyes. Tan skin wrapped around lean, well-muscled arms and legs. A bikers jacket, worn jeans, and biker boots.

My lips twisted with displeasure, and my hand tightened on the doorknob. "What the hell are you doing here?" I growled.
